Another sign of Sony’s sinking fortunes came out last week, when the Japanese hardware sales chart showed that the Xbox 360 was gaining on it. The 360, which has virtually no base in Japan, shot up by tripling its normal sales to a point that, while 1/8 the Nintendo Wii and 1/12 the Nintendo DS, was within spitting distance of the PS3’s sales. The Xbox 360 tripled its way to 7,583 sales for the week, while the PS3 lumbered at 9,481 sales.
While no one is saying this means the 360 is taking over Japan, it is a sure sign of Sony’s sinking fortunes. The gamers who might normally buy a PlayStation must not be interested, and are putting their dollars into a console that is cheaper, has more games, and isn’t looking like more of a failure every month.
It was close, thanks to the new Trusty Bell JRPG, which I might add looks to be very fun for anyone who likes playing RPGs. But unfortunatlly the 360 is back to it's 2,500-3,500 sales again. It seems that the little push hasen't lasted. Although, it just shows that if MS would push these games more with a marketing blitz in Japan, maybe they'll get somewhere.
It still seems that MS doesn't put enough behind the 360 in Japan like it should. Everyone buys Wiis and DSs but those have very very few games that are actually worth it, yet the Wii sells around 65k each week, and the DS is over 110k each week. It could be that the Japanese just like to support their home grown systems and shun the American system, but if you break it down to the bits inside, all 3 run on IBM made CPUs, nVidia/ATi graphics chips, and they're mostly all built in China.
But oh well, 360 just needs bigger named games to help it at this point. Only time will tell really. The truth though, MS doesn't need to finish first in Japan to make money in the market.
