Computer makers have been told they'll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite consumer resistance to Vista and its compatibility problems.

By early 2008, Microsoft's contracts with computer makers will require companies to only sell Vista-loaded machines. "The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January," said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. "At that point, they'll have no choice."

Despite Microsoft's relentless promotion of Vista, manufacturers are still seeing plenty of demand from customers for systems preloaded with XP, especially in the finicky SOHO market.

In a recent post on its Direct2Dell blog, Dell reaffirmed to concerned customers that it wasn't about to force small business users -- who typically purchase PCs piecemeal, rather than in large enterprise-style orders -- to shift to Vista, which has experienced a less-than-stellar reaction from many buyers because of driver issues and moderately beefy hardware requirements.

"Dell recognizes the needs of small business customers and understands that more time is needed to transition to a new operating system," the post read in part. "The plan is to continue offering Windows XP on select Dimension and Inspiron systems until later this [northern] summer."

"From a local perspective, the post was a reminder more than an announcement," Dell ANZ corporate communications manager Paul McKeon told APC.

I guess this is a wakeup call to any hardware and software makers who are sitting around.   It's time to actually work and upgrade your drivers/software to be Vista compatible.

Yeah, manufacturers are the ones getting the push here.  They've really been lazy with Vista.  This is a wakeup call that they need to fix their broken Vista drivers.

[:@]The manufacturers need to revamp their laptop program and quit selling models running Vista with only 512mb of ram. What a disaster. These machines just crawl. Reminds me of the old Win3.XX days.

Well, they used to sell system with XP and only 256MB or ram or less.  But now, unless you go for the really low end $700-$900 model notebooks, everything else has 1GB or even 2GB.   My sister got one with 2GB for $1300

What happens to software writers?
This sux majorly unless the hardware manufacturers do something about this.

I've noticed that stuff we use such as Tag Readers are not vista compatible yet although our software written in .NET 2.0 which should be vista compatible.

On another note, .NET 3.0 is okay but crap at the same time.
The way each object such as (buttons and lables) are defined using their custom xml standard is not bad, but where in earth are the drop down menu's telling you the options available for the property?

Example 1: Colour, i cannot see what colours are availalble in a drop down list for .NET 3 forms like it used to be for .NET 2 forms :(

Well i'm still hoping XP support will be extended a bit because there's nothing wrong with XP and it runs great!

Is it just me or does this seem like really rushing it? Wonder when Service Pack 1 for Vista will arrive...

how exactly is this rushing it? what other industry continues to produce out of date products after release of a new one. Try buying a new Ford based on a 2 year old design, or a TV. Microsoft are quite right to stop selling XP, support will continue for quite some time to come.

I misread it, thought it was support they were ending.

About Spy

Hello world, as they say. I'm in Melbourne Australia and work as a Systems Administrator. I go to work every day with a smile on my face as I just love my work. Our company works across 30+ sites around the state so I travel a bit. We use mostly MS products, IBM hardware and 100% Cisco networking...it's a sweet mix for sure. I've been around Bink's site since it's inception way back when it was just a group on the MS site...that was a while ago. Bink.nu is the leading source of Microsoft news on the web that's for sure and I love being a part of Steven's team. Anyway, hope you enjoy the site.
