Days after Windows Vista went RTM, the first reports of the final version leaking onto the web have emerged. That didn’t take long, did it?

The software pirate community has been hard at work trying to get the final RTM version the Vista business edition onto the Internet for download through P2P sites, and according to a number of reports on the Internet, they’ve succeeded.

Reports of Vista RTM activation cracks have also surfaced, but therein lies one of the dangers of piracy – one never really knows if you’re getting what you think you’re getting, and who knows how the contents have been manipulated to damage you and your data.

We at iTWire definitely do not condone piracy in any way, shape or form whatsoever, and highly recommend that anyone wanting to get the final release of Vista do so through the proper official channels.

However, reports suggest that the Vista RTM has been spied upon P2P networks, through bittorrent download websites and on Usenet, with the build number reported to be 6000.16386.061101-2205.

Given Microsoft’s constant updates of the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) software to trap the pirates, it also seems totally futile to try and pirate Vista, as it would seem Microsoft will be able to find out and are likely to try and disable any pirate copies, causing grief to pirates and making them waste a lot of time, bandwidth and megabytes in downloading the pirate software in the first place, and then going through the whole installation process.

So... while some out there might be tempted to give it a go, it’s clearly not worth it, with a long battle ahead for the pirates and Microsoft as both sides work to break, and then repair, Vista’s anti-piracy controls.

If you really want Vista, and you want it to run nice and smoothly... buy a new computer with Vista pre-loaded. That opportunity will come worldwide on January 30, 2007, where the world’s early adopters will rejoice and splash their cash on Microsoft’s latest and greatest.

Or... there's always a Mac, Linux or your existing Windows OS. There's never been a greater range of OS choices!

Takes 10seconds to get downloads of Vista that claim to be "final" releases.

I am not even amazed that it leaked this quickly.

About the comment from itwire - "there's always Mac, Linux... " hehhehe yeah right as if that competes :P

Yeah - I really feel that Microsoft in the first place puts a lot of effort into a system that, at it's best, just bugs the pirate.
And regarding pirates as a whole, many of the them are fueled by the pure challenge of cracking something new that Microsoft throws at them.

But you can say what you want itwire of australia to feel a bit better. ^^

For one; is this coming from the guy who called his buddy at MS and got a copy of the RTM early... And anyways, I have installed and reinstalled on 3 machines over and over again every build that has been release for as long as I can remember so don't taunt me on wasted install times :)
And OMG it has taken way longer than it should have for the release to have leaked. AND I am still waiting for it to be released to my MSDN subscription! So much for the Friday night special!! Not to mention I have my key just bleeding from the license site ready to be keyed into a RTM or RTW! I WANT A COPY HURRY THE HELL UP!

This whole weekend is a waste I could have installed it and configured IIS and Visual Studio and SQL Enterprise Manager but no, I have been on steady alert to every frickin rss feed possible only to read some story saying that it would be a waste of time installing an RTM released by pirates, no offence but screw you (seriously no offence, I love you). So as you can see this whole "waiting" thing is killing me coupled with bragging column/blog ists. I can't take it and I'm trying not to crack here. I need my MS fix and I have been good for so long that I don't want to break and try a torrened version of the RTM with my real key to see if it successfully activates. I mean I really am trying hard here. Please if anyone has love an support send it my way because I'm sure I'll need it. Luckily, Call of Duty and Tony came out for my 360 so I snagged them to help pace the time by. Oh and doesn't Zune come out in 2 days. Maybe that's what is the hold up? Probably not but I'll give hope to anything right about now!

It is 7:20am and I've been up all night, wait, weekend, waiting and reading for my legal release with no luck! So as you can see, if I had only wasted the "time, bandwidth, and installation process" in the first place, I might be waking up right now, fully refreshed for the day. Happy and alert for a wonderful Sunday filled with football and Vista, but no; I feel like a drug fiend waiting for my fix!
If anyone can here me out there please I need my Vista!!! I am crying in the corner somewhere, just release it for us software junkies!

Oh, and lastly piss off with the whole Mac/Linux!!! WHAT ARE THEY??? Are they those stupid prizes that come in my corn flakes?

Love the Bink

I heard that the leaked/cracked version out uses a few older files from RC2 (probably) to get around activation, but that leaves you with the timebomb which ends around May of 2007.  But this could just be one version out there, I don't know.

Many sites published Vista RTM screenshots so I assume they've the original Vista RTM ISO DVD, right? I would like to try the Vista final version for 30 days, because I'm too curious to see the big improvements over the RC1/RC2 versions. Do you know what's the MD5/CRC hash for this Vista RTM ISO image? I don't want fake modified dvd images with trojans/viruses...

Thanks again for the moral support ado!

I'm not quite sure, but as for a good bunch the RTM screenshots, they where sending from Microsofts little PR department.

Regarding the MD5 or CRC sums it would help identifying the good stuff. :)

Mate did you actually even read the article(s)?

1)  "For one; is this coming from the guy who called his buddy at MS and got a copy of the RTM early".   No, it's actually coming from someone totally different.  The article came from itwire.com.au.  You will also notice that "the guy who called his budy..." is Steven Bink, and I am not Steven (never have been, actually).

2)  The article is mearly pointing out how quickly the RTM has reached pirated stage.  I am sure MS will be fuming about this considering they actually "Release to" very very few manufacturers and even then with strict controls over the security of the build.

The RTM is available and no it does not contain RC2 files in it. All files are original RTM but what people are doing is replacing certain files from the beta, RC1 or RC2 so they can activate the RTM using their beta keys. From what I have read this does not work too well as then the RTM says "evaluation copy" after you reboot so I assume activation will expire.

Lol, sorry Spy. I was just having some fun while impationtly waiting. Maybe I should go freeze myself until it is released... inside joke.

I do have a question for you though; What do you think Microsofts opinion of downloading a copy of the RTM and using your purchased key on it?

November 13, 2006 12:26 AM

GP007 said:

To Kevtech ,  That's basically what I mean, there are old files from the RC version replaced, (by the crack or whatever you want to call it) which lets you get around activation,  it's still activated, but it's now stuck with the RC timebomb which expires around May 2007, then the OS can't be used and when you try to use it, it'll give you a error and shutdown.

The timebomb is May 31, 2007. Big deal! It is just as easy to remove the stupid timebomb as it is in Windows XP.

The next release will do it for you, lazy sobs!

And no activation and timebombs dont bother pirates at all. It only bothers newbies, wannabes, and about 95% of the average user base that Microsoft has yet once again choosen to completly ignore when it comes to activation. That is why we have chossen to once again hack it. One of these days Microsoft will listen. People will get sick of this crap in the next few years, hopefully!

I agree with war.

Only legal or people that have been victems of conterfits will really get hurt by this. Any one that downloaded it for their own the OS for their computers now has a good enough understanding of what they are doing that google will prvide them with the right answers. Google is teaching me Linux one query at a time.

The game of "Tom and Jerry" continues, with paid up Microsoft customers in the middle have to work around Tom's carefully placed mouse traps (WGA), to avoid getting anything "snap"ed off. In the mean time out of date hacked versions of Visa will be circulating for $3 a pop.

To anyone who cares, Microsoft will start giving away DVD's of Vista FREE in the next month or so, so why bother with hacked version.

Obviously you'll need to reinstall every 90 days - legal though... But hey, you'll be happy to go back to XP after 90 days anyway! ;-)

I've been running Vista since July and only boot back to XP to patch that partition (I dual-boot my tablet with XP & Vista).   The only reason I keep the XP partition around at all is because the USB TVTuner I have for when I'm traveling only has drivers for XP (the XP drivers install on Vista, but audio won't work).

The other reason for the dual-booting before now was to hold all my data while I did a format & clean install of the Vista partition.   But this weekend I flattened both partitions and shrunk my XP partition to only 10GB with Vista using the rest of the drive.    Except for some hardware-specific things with my tablet, it runs great with Vista RTM!!!   MUCH better than pre-RTM builds!!!   The machine runs better now under Vista than it did under XP, so no, I won't be going back to XP after 90-days.

Sounds as though Microsoft has one (semi-happy) Vista customer!

All I want is SP3 or an XP rollup patch. So a long wait :-(

For me, I'll hang onto my money for now... Vista can wait, until all the hardware manufacturers have geared up for it, and their machines tested, and their prices dropped ;-)

It will be interesting to see how much hype the PC manufacturers will use after Christmas, as it is all very low key at the moment.

About Spy

Hello world, as they say. I'm in Melbourne Australia and work as a Systems Administrator. I go to work every day with a smile on my face as I just love my work. Our company works across 30+ sites around the state so I travel a bit. We use mostly MS products, IBM hardware and 100% Cisco networking...it's a sweet mix for sure. I've been around Bink's site since it's inception way back when it was just a group on the MS site...that was a while ago. Bink.nu is the leading source of Microsoft news on the web that's for sure and I love being a part of Steven's team. Anyway, hope you enjoy the site.
