Just weeks after releasing Windows Vista Beta 1, Microsoft has shifted our paradigms again, unveiling a preview of beta 2 at the TechEd 2005 developer conference this morning.

Among the breakthrough new features shown to the 2,000 developers paying $2,000 each to attend TechEd: Solitaire with new background images, a scrolling Alt+Tab bar and Microsoft's version of Mac OS X's Expose function, which allows all the open Windows to be viewed at once.

So after all that hype Soliter is the only new redesigned usable feature in it LOL.

If they want me to switch at final there going to have to be more feature rich than redesigned soliter, maybe notepad would look better with different backgrounds.

Come on these people at Microsoft must be seriously bored out there minds to redesign soliter.

LOL vectore solitaire can't they just work on somthing useful for once like reducing efforts to install drivers and stuff lol. Oh another new feature there doing there removing my from documents lol, hehe. Can't they just get WinFS in and stuff I'm sure that is more important than solitaire.

Look at the programming model that allows such windows behavior... that's to say: even with the shitty tech MS has been tossin' at our faces they can make something with potential. Certainly, the cool-switch (Atl-Tab) needed a refurb (I've got the PowerTask PowerToy, and is still a bit untidy). In other news, Exposé is maybe cool, but not innovative, since the tile windows and the cascade has been features that allowed the same functionality with less practicity. I use both Mac and PC and it's all about making things more responsive. Both platform has their issues about this item.

Cue constructive comments......

If you look a bit closer you will see that the redesign of solitaire is a proof-of-concept and an example of practise-as-you-preach.

Firstly it proves the capabilities of the new visual display model, and the richness of a vector-drawn interface.

Secondly, how can Microsoft encourage developers to take advantage of the new display model, and potentially re-write their UI or parts thereof optimised and designed for said display model, if they haven't bothered with their own applications?

Something to think about.

As Solitaire is one of the most important programs in the entire Windows suite, this has sold the new OS for me.

Yes, backgrounds make all the difference, I often play Solitaire thinking, why can't this be more high-tech?

While it may prove the capabilities of the new visual display model, it's not exactly exciting is it? I mean, surely there are more interesting things they could have done with it...

Dear Microsoft,

You guys are the king of graphics and games, the prince of GUIs.  To bad you are the stooges of security.

Can you possible take some the people in the Easter Egg Department and retrain them to perform security audits on software delelopment?  You need the police equivalent of Internal Affairs and you need it quickly.  Your pretty colors and sweet beeps and buzzes, not to mention the new and improved animated help buddies, all do nothing to keep me secure.

It is like you decided to sell the locks off of the doors and windows of the house and use the money to buy jokes and giggles. Then you have the audacity to give us a EULA that says that you have no responsibility regarding security.

I miss the good old days.  Please MS, we are tired, and in no hurry to buy more flowery toys when our rear ends are hanging over shark infested waters.

totally agree with astcell.  instead of "moronizing" the operating system by making it esthetically pleasing, how about making it more f'ing secure ? [:@]

one of the first things i do when i do a new install of windows is right click my computer >  properties > advanced performance settings > adjust for best performance

the second thing i do is Start > Run > services.msc > Disable Themes

my point is if we wanted to look at pretty pictures we'd go to a theater or watch tv - what we want is a f'ing secure and stable OS one that doesnt have a new vulnerability found every other day and one that doesnt need to be patched every month (and a few times in betwee)

if you want to create cute and pretty stuff go to Hollywood and make a f'ing movie [:P]

hmm.... we have a chicken & egg problem here.

Did Unix come first?

or

Did lienux steal first?

btw. i think this very simple solitaire example conveys a lot to graphics programmers and designers.

Watch some Channel9 and find out about the completely rewritten driver model. Improved stability, managability, security.

A word on "Can't they just..."

WinFS beta 1 was just delivered 4 months early. It provides (until Longhorn Server) no additional end-user benfits over the pervasive desktop search already integrated into Vista. From a developer perspective, no, I would rather they get it right before 'getting it in'.

Solitaire, unless you're really slower than you sound it clearly a technology demo to indicate how a well-known (and simple) application can be revamped using WPF (Avalon).

Did you just want to moan today?

the only thing I want is an ultrasuperfastintaneous search, is it to much to ask?

also we can ask for:

better CD response

better driver management

better disk performance

better processes information

better network information

and so on and on 'n on 'n on

I agree with outofcoffee, Microsoft is re-writting many components.  I'm with the academic alliance, so I tested Windows Vista Beta 1, and I like it.  I'm waiting impatiently for Beta 2, as the rollodex feature is supposed to debut in it.  I think this new operating system, when it is finally released, will be just as secure as any Apple or Unix/Linux system.

I would saw just one word, PERFORMANCE!!!

MS must make OS that has Performance   !!! The comes the security.

What is the use of an OS that can not run smooth on midrange modern PC?
