In an instant message chat, Microsoft has told the Windows Featured Communities that the demand for Windows Vista Beta 2 has been overwhelming and is seen as the largest downloaded software in history.  Currently, they are serving product keys out ten times faster then the downloads can be served and are serving the files as fast as they can - any faster and there would be a measurable impact on the internet. Quote:

"So, we are literally saying that if we increased our bandwidth any further there's a possibilty of taking down the Internet - people might have problems with World Cup viewing, etc"

People who have recieved Vista Beta 2 product keys, but are unable to download, may need to wait a few days, up to one week.  Microsoft encoruages users who want to try out Windows Vista Beta 2 to order the DVD.  When they recieve the DVD in 1-4 weeks, install it, and activate it, they will be automattically guaranteed an RC1 upgrade.

I couldn't download it the day it was released... had to wait till the next day.  Most people got it that night. I was lucky, and got like 4 keys, since I had to keep putting the "get" url in, which kept giving me a new key, lol

I downloaded it the day of release using download accelerator plus. DAP uses more reliable mirrors. It would have been less of a bite if they (microsoft) had leaked it a few days early. Some ISP's (like my ISP) filter bit torrents BT clients won't work on my ISP's network, can't connect.. Anyway I feel that ms might have

a winner here.... maybe guiness will publish this world record...

i've gotta call BS on this.  Microsoft is big, but not so big that their servers will take down the internet.  if that were so, then the millions of people who are performing filesharing (movies, music, porn, games, etc.) *daily* would have done that long ago.  not to mention any time a big linux vendor like Ubuntu makes a major release available for download.

the yahoos who made that statement obviously do not understand how the internet works.
