Europe already had Windows XP N and Vista N, Windows without Media Player, which hardly any OEM installed on their machines. Now Europe OEMs can only install Windows 7 E edition, Windows 7 without IE8. The OEMs can then decide which browser they include for their customers.

Windows 7 N will also be available for OEMs, this will have no IE8 and no WMP12.

I assume this is for the consumer channels only, so that Volume License customers in Europe can choose any editon of Windows 7.

Yup.

On the other hand, it's less of a headache for MS if they did it worldwide. MS has to support all version of IE while the OS was supported even if few use the browser.

MS is still supporting IE for Windows 2000 for roughly another 9 months! The number using Windows 2000 is under 1% and those using IE 5 for Windows 2000 is probably way thes than that.

In comparison, most consumer products have a lifespan of 3-5 years. They should pull WMP and IE and make them separate products. Give them 3-5 years.

If IE 10 is out in a few years, i doubt if I'd be using IE 8 with Windows 7.
