Windows 7’s new WARP system can run Direct3D 10 and 10.1 on the CPU, doing away with the need for a hardware 3D accelerator in some circumstances

It turns out that Intel isn’t the only company that’s looking at performing Direct3D in software; Microsoft has just announced that it’s also planning to introduce a new feature called WARP in Windows 7 that allows you to run Direct3D 10 and 10.1 on the CPU.

In what could be seen as an easy answer to the Vista-capable debacle, where there was some confusion as to what 3D graphics hardware you specifically needed to run Windows Vista’s Aero interface, Microsoft has introduced what it calls a ‘fully conformant software rasterizer’ called WARP (Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform) 10, which does away with the need for a dedicated hardware 3D accelerator altogether.

I think this is a daft idea. This will introduce a whole host of new PCs being declared as "Windows 7 Capable" (or some other equivalent sticker) when they are only rendering Aero using the CPU. In my opinion, lots of consumers will be surprised when they find that although the PC can render Aero, the graphics performance that is available via the processor will be substandard.

come on dude what are you talking about, the new processors that are out now perform better than even intels integrated processor at crysis for gods sake...

since rtm is what 2 years away that means the i7's will be more mainstream and pretty much the defacto by that point so seems like a good trade off...

what i hope they do however is the reverse as well its great that WARP will make the CPU able ot handle graphics... but i want to see when they make the GPU able to handle the CPU natively.

WARP10 has nothing to do with Aero.  While it can run DX10 code on the CPU it's meant as a base for software developers to code DX apps for, not just games.

In-fact this has nothing to do with games either, sure it can run crysis at 7fps, but that's just a tech demo to show how fast the software code is, nothing more.

This is another tool for developers to target with their apps, and if your PC "has" a DX10 graphics card then the apps won't default to software mode which is what this basically is.   Adding DX10 stuff to other things outside of gaming should be very interesting.
