Windows Vista Ultimate users began to receive the first set of "Ultimate Extras". But arguably the most anticipated Ultimate Extra was not there -- Windows DreamScene.

Windows client director, Jeff Putt has confirmed that this extra will not be available in its final form immediately after launch. However, a technology preview may be coming soon for Windows Vista Ultimate users who want to give it a try.

Windows DreamScene enables users to use looping high-definition video content (MPEG, WMV) as an animated wallpaper. Thanks to the new 3D accelerated desktop in Windows Vista, the animated wallpaper uses virtually no CPU (just a little for decoding the video).

Microsoft demonstrated Windows DreamScene yesterday at the launch event which showed Windows DreamScene using an animated wallpaper created by Stardock. The wallpaper they showed will be available exclusively at Neowin.net's partner site, WinCustomize.com, in February.

More information on public availability for Windows Vista Ultimate users is expected soon.

Ah, that's why you need a dual-core CPU with 2 Gb of memory [:S].. to run a f*cking movie in the background behind your application windows .. Another extra which scores high on the uselessability chart.

It uses very little cpu to decode the video only, it's like playing a youtube clip in your browser or something,  probably uses even less then that.

It all depends on what video you are playing, if it's something big and HD'ish, then it probably does use more cpu.   IF it's something small like the animated waterfall they showed off, you won't notice any performence hit.

And if it's useless or not doesn't matter, it's a Ultimate EXTRA, you get it if you want it, and run it if you want it.

...if you insist. That video screensaver is nothing to do with DreamScene.

For a start, DreamScene isn't a screensaver, it runs constantly as animated wallpaper with your desktop icons overlaid on top and doesn't just kick in when your computer is idle.

Secondly, I doubt that DreamScene had even started to be developed in July 2005 considering that the recent leaked beta was such a resource hog and the developers are still working to minimise processor usage.

If you think its useless then you dont have a clue. You´d think people know by now that there´s more to Windows then just beeing able to use it for work.

Well having to sit behind a computer for 8+ hours a day I look forward to things like DreamScene, Windowblinds, etc.  If I have to stare at the screen for those hours, at least I can try and make it enjoyable.

DreamScene is designed to use as little CPU as possible, and the impact on your system recourses is very minimal.  Here is an article that offers a little more explanation on DreamScene and the upcoming enhancement DeskScapes.
