The fabulously wealthy co-founder of Microsoft has sacked crew members of his luxury £60 million superyacht after they tested positive for drugs. And wealthy celebrities who pay £400,000 a week to charter the 303ft Tatoosh could be asked to leave if they use them.
Software investor Paul Allen has spared no expense fitting out his elite party palace to appeal to his circle of rich acquaintances, who range from film moguls Steven Speielburg and James Cameron to Mick Jagger, U2, Cameron Diaz and Ruby Wax. But now he has begun a enforcing a “zero tolerance” drug policy on board the floating pleasure dome. The Mail on Sunday can reveal that this month six of Tatoosh’s crew of 30 were invited to resign from there jobs after cocaine was found in tests of their hair and urine. And Mr Allen nicknamed the “accidental zillionaire” after he and Bill Gates invented the software that drives every PC, has let it be known that he will apply for the same rules to his wealthy paying guests. “This is being taken very seriously” an executive involved in the enforcement of the police said last night. “If a guest were to be found with drugs, they could be taken of the boat and the charter could be cancelled. Hair-testing shows whether drugs have been used up to 90 days ago. “This is something that felt had to be done, partially for obvious safety reasons. You wouldn’t want a crew of your chartered yacht to be high any more that you would an airline pilot. But it is also because legal experts have told us that in US and other ports, the authorities could detain or even confiscate a boat if drug usage was found”

Mr Allen is a shy and portly bachelor whose few girlfriends include tennis champion Monica Seles. He owns a £5 million London town house, a New York penthouse, a villa in the south of France and a mansion on an island near his native Seattle.

The Tatoosh is just one of his collections of rich boy’s toys, which include a jumbo jet and a rocket that can carry a pilot and two passengers 62 miles into space.

Obviously if it's your job to help operate any vehicles, but especially a large ocean vessel you should not be under the influence of intoxicants.

Likewise for legal liability reasons it makes sense to prohibit posession of illegal substances on your property.

But I really don't see how it matters what someone does on their own time.

But maybe I'm just too much of a Libertarian to understand.

I was about to say:

"after he and Bill Gates invented the software that drives every PC"

That couldn't be farther from the truth...  commentors should know better.
