Bob muglia told at the keynote here at MMS that the next version of SQL server will be released in 2008. Given the Microsoft product lifecycle announcements (major release, minor release) I assume this will be a R2 release of SQL and so SQL 2005 R2.

call me crazy, but could we not just call it sql 2008? 2005 R2 sounds out of date already, and I consider sql 2005 a new product still!

don't get me wrong, our clients will more likely install something that sounds like an update but I think it's time to "gee up" these hold outs.
