I have been playing around with "Microsoft Windows XP Fundamentals for Legacy PCs". The result can be seen in screenshots posted on my gallery.

Microsoft Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (WinFLP) is a Windows-based operating system designed for enterprise customers with legacy PCs who are not in a position to purchase new hardware. WinFLP provides the same security and manageability as Microsoft Windows XP SP2 while providing a smooth migration path to the latest hardware and operating system.

Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (WinFLP) requires:

  • A minimum of 611 MB of free hard drive space. Actual requirements will vary based on your system configuration and the applications and features you choose to install. Installing all optional components requires 1151 MB of disk space. These requirements are reported on the screen as you select options in the Setup wizard. Additional hard disk space may be required if you are installing over a network. Also, you should reserve additional space for future updates and service packs.
  • A computer with 233 megahertz or higher processor clock speed (300 MHz is recommended); Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor is recommended.
  • 64 MB of RAM. 256 MB of RAM is recommended.

I installed it in a Vmware Workstation Virtual Machine with 128 MB of RAM.

I also tested a scenario with a 128 MB machine with no disks, booting into XP fundamentals then connecting usig RDP to a terminal server. The same scenario using 64MB resuted in a too low virtual memory error/crash. So 64 MB RAM is supported but it needs a disk for virtual memory.

Check out the screenshots with my comments at source. Click on the pics in the gallery to show full size.

Why is it that you always write "PC's" instead of "PCs"?

Even the logo says "Microsoft Windows XP Fundamentals for Legacy PCs", but you changed it to "Microsoft Windows XP Fundamentals for Legacy PC's".

While we're at it, there's also no such thing as "DVD's", and "CD's"...

I've looked at my https://licensing.microsoft.com page where it shows I have 83 Windows XP Pro licenses with SA still current.  I can download Windows XP, but where do I go to download this XP Fundamentals?

Well....

If the "Recommended" spec for running this OS is 256MB RAM and 300Mhz, why not install Windows XP and tune+tweak it slightly... It will run fast enough and have none of these heavy restrictions that Windows Fundamentals has..

See here for more info:

http://nexle.dk/daniel/win2000-32mb/

The link is called Windows 2000 on old computers with 32MB RAM but the steps will work just as fine for Windows XP and it will even run moderatey fast!

Good luck!

Picking on the grammar is poor form. For the most part, apostrophes are required for pluralization of abbreviations for disambiguation (e.g., to distinguish between PC'S and PCS when used in a CAPITALIZED TITLE), when periods are used in the abbreviation (e.g., Ph.D.'s) or for single lowercase letters (e.g., indivisible has four i's). It's sufficiently prevalent that regional differences exist in this based on progressiveness of the local english - in College here in Alberta, we were told to ALWAYS use apostrophes. Just because Microsoft uses one way, certainly does not make it the right. As for this WinFLOP, its really nothing you can't do without nLite or XSetup, and a few minutes of tweaking.

You are spot on right there defiant. I have seen many native English speakers using that too: CD's instead of CDs etc.

regarding the "no ping" screenshot, well, I tested a copy and ping works for me just fine. (perhaps I have a different version?)

anyway, for all those command line utils you can just copy over the exe's from another computer's system32 folder. (e.g. if ping doesn't work in your version, copy C:\Windows\system32\ping.exe from some other XP install to yours)

As far as I can tell, Fundamentals is just a very nicely slimmed down version of XP-SP2. if it runs well on legacy pc's, it should run even better on top-of-the-line stuff!

It ( windows flp) is not a complete OS

so Installing it is  basically an experiment.

But still, not having a password and user name accepted after 3 lengthy insyall [procedures is VERY frustrating.

I have asked someone who HAS installed it how he did it

but no answer as yet.

the net settings on one setup page say "auto" if so, then it should detect the network

I have a cable connected to my router.

but the NIC card is a davicom and may not be detected easily or automatically

could this be the answer.

it seems stupit if a net connection is necessary to bring up the os,

I realize I'm a day late and dollar short, but here's my 2 bits.  Adding the "'s" would be the INcorrect way, whether its "PC's", "DVD's", and "CD's" or its "pc's", "dvd's", and "cd's".  Why?  Just think for a second or two... PC = Personal Computer DVD = Digital Video Disk and CD = Compact Disk.  How would you plurilize the last words in these acronyms? "computers" "disks" and "disks".  Wow, no apostrophe, why?  Computer's and disk's would indicate ownership, not plurality.  Apostrophes only show plurality with single lower case letters, ie: "p's", "d's", and "c's".  Regular words have an s/es at the end and acronyms simply have a lower case "s".  Therefore, the correct spelling/arrangement would be "PCs", "DVDs", and "CDs".  "pcs", "dvds", and "cds" is not correct, because in order for an acronym to be an acronym the involved letters must be uppercase, and the "s" showing plurality must be lowercase.

I'll play with it in VMWare Workstation first to see if all my favorite applications work under it as normal, and then I'll try it on my old Pentium III laptop and see if it works well for my real world needs.
