Windows Server 2003 R2 will be released to manufacturing today!

Windows Server 2003 R2 is an update release of the award-winning Windows Server 2003 operating system. Built on Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Server 2003 R2 takes advantage of the stability and security of a proven code base while extending connectivity and control into new areas. Windows Server 2003 R2 offers all the benefits of Windows Server 2003 SP1 while greatly improving branch office server solutions, identity and access management, storage setup and management, and application development inside and outside your organization's traditional boundaries. Windows Server 2003 R2 is easy to integrate into an existing Windows Server 2003 environment as it has the same application compatibility, manageability, and serviceability as the existing servers with SP1.

The Benefits:

1.

Increased efficiency. Your IT organization benefits from extending connectivity and control in three key areas:

Branch office server solutions

Identity and access management

Storage setup and management

New features enable the organization to reduce setup and ongoing information sharing costs throughout and beyond the organization.

2.

Scale and performance. All R2 editions are available as x64 versions. x64 enables you to easily run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications and make the gradual shift to 64-bit computing at your own pace while preserving current investments in 32-bit applications.

3.

Highest quality Windows Server. Get the fastest, most reliable, most secure Windows Server operating system ever offered by Microsoft. Windows Server 2003 R2 is built on Windows Server 2003 SP1 for enhanced security, increased reliability, and a simplified administration to help enterprise customers across all industries.

4.

Robust application platform. The deep integration with Microsoft .NET enables an unprecedented level of software integration through the use of XML Web services. XML Web services construct discrete, building-block applications that connect to each other as well as to other, larger applications through the Internet. This also provides the ability to create identity-aware applications and UNIX application portability.

5.

Enhanced information worker productivity. With Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, you get an integrated information worker collaboration solution right out of the box.

Windows Server 2003 R2 is available in three editions:

1.

Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition

2.

Windows Server 2003 R2, Enterprise Edition

3.

Windows Server 2003 R2, Datacenter Edition

So no web edition update, but:

Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 will be released 90 days from now.
Windows 2003 Storage Server R2 branded as Storage Server 2005 or 2006, will be released through OEM channels in q1 2006

The only thing I am hanging out for is the new iteration of DFS/FRS.  Granted, I won't be installing this on 20 production servers on the first day it is released, but hopefully within 6-12 months.  We'll see how other guinea-pigs go with it before I risk my environment.  TEST TEST TEST before deploying.
