Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over 50 ways spyware can enter your PC.

Since releasing Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) on January 6, 2005, we have received feedback from customers and have made enhancements to the software based on this feedback. We have enhanced some of the real-time protection agents, added new threat categories, and improved stability and performance. If you are using a previous version you can simply upgrade to the refreshed version. The version number of the refreshed version is 1.0.509. To check the version number, click About Microsoft AntiSpyware… on the Help menu.

Participants in the worldwide SpyNet™ community play a key role in determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, which are automatically downloaded to your PC, so you stay up-to-date.

The user must be an administrator to install this application.

Note: This download has been updated to include signature version 5687, which is the most current as of February 10, 2005. Customers who have installed Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware prior to this date do not need to re-download. They will receive signature updates as part of their next automatic or manual signature update.

First we should upgrade to the refresh build, then we do not need to download it all???
I say get it at source and upgrade to get the latest agent updates.

Looks to me like if you want the new version of the actual software, you need to download the refresh build, but there are also new signatures, and if you just want these, just use the automatic update inside the program.

When I do a manual update right now, it comes back saying have the most recent updates to the software & def. file but actually:

I still show having version 1.0.501 AND my definition file is actually newer than the one posted here. I have def. file version 5689 as of 2/12. What gives? So basically, the manual update didn't work, and I have a newer update than what this site has posted. Of course, I have AU turned off (so sp2 doesn't get crammed down my throat) apparently... or is it just crappy software management? Maybe one day... (kudos to you if this actually gets posted)

Personally, I just downloaded the latest build - over a broadband connection it only takes a moment or two.....

Saves messing around.

Yeah, that's what I wound up doing, after turning on my AU & BITS services (one at a time) to see if they were hampering the update... they weren't cause it still didn't update. So, like you, I MANUALLY updated from their site and of course, turned those services back off. Just wanted to point all that out to others lol.

Al,

The 29 items seen by SBC Yahoo and the 32 items seen by AdAware, were they tracking cookies?   The Release Notes for builds 501 & 509 of MS Anti-Spyware says that it will not report/delete these.

Hi,

I would like to bring up an issue on the MS Anti-Spy which one of our user whose laptop has MS anti-spy installed was unable to detect some existing adware or spywares inside her system. It only prompt to block one of the Webpage. MS Anti-Spy was unable to detect any problem. She also have Search & Destroy bots.

However, after installing Symantec Corporate Edition 10 and running a full scan, there was more than 51 threats detetected and quarantined. Since I cannot attached what are the wares found, I have briefly keyed in some here for discussion...

RISK                                Filename        Threat
Adware.Medload            mm63.ocx      adware
Adware.BetterInternet   ceres.cab        adware
Adware.MemoryMeter     i3F.tmp          adware
Adware.WebRebates      i4F.tmp          adware
Adware.BetterInternet   fammext.exe   adware
spyware.e2give             pi1_25.exe      spyware
Adware.Delfin               mm15201518.Stub.exe  Adware
Adware.TMKSoft.XPlugin sysupd1003.exe Adware
Adware.TMKSoft.XPlugin tksrv99.exe     Adware
Adware.MemoryMeter     TVM_B5_Bundle_20.. Adware
Adware.FavoriteMan      59kd53fg.exe   adware

too many..like A0006198.DLL, A0006171.exe A0006120.exe
dialer, adware and spyware etc. Some of the detected are deep inside the Restore point and was detected and quarantined.

And to further check for spywares, PestPatrol 4.5 was installed and mostly spyware and adwares cookies was detected and deleted as most of the risk was already quarntined by Symantec AntiVirus CE 10.

On my own system MS AntiSpy was installed. And on most occassions, visiting a worm infected site will be immediately detected by Symantec AVCE10 rather then by MS AntiSpy.

Adware.Windupdates
MHTMLReDir.Exploit
Adware.Istbar

Well, hope MS AntiSpy would be able to detect before any attacks proceed. Though the other 2 products mentioned seems to be reacting better. Any comments are welcomed. Thanks.
