ChannelWeb is reporting that Microsoft has removed the backup feature from it's upcoming Power Pack 1 update for Windows Home Server! Microsoft isn't making it easy for the any partners and retailers that were promoting this very usefull feature.
The backup feature (first introduced on CES 2008) gave Windows Home Server users the ability to backup their data collection stored on their WHS and was set to be released as part of the upcoming Power Pack 1 update.Todd Headrick, marketing director of WHS, explaines the feature was removed due to issues with backups being made/restores being rolled back and concurrent use of the server by users:
"The feature had to be cut due to the interplay with the connector install and the fact that consumers may hork their backup database by doing an incomplete backup or interrupting the restore process. The team will look to add this functionality in a future release after PowerPack 1"
Headrick wrote in a post on Microsoft's Windows Home Server forums.
Update: Sorry about that .. It seems the feature will still be there only slightly limited. Users can still backup their shared folders but not their computer backups. Todd Headrick wrote in response to the source article:
"We did not cut the backup feature coming in Power Pack 1. Users will still be able to backup their Shared Folders to 1 or more external hard drives. In the late stages, we added the capability for users to backup the home computer backup database as an additional option but in testing discovered that it was best to only allow users to backup their shared folders - the key scenario customers are asking for, and we'll deliver."
He also insured us PP1 will include a fix for the data-corruption bug that has been haunting WHS users since launch.
