For the first time, we're making the MSDN Library freely available for download from Microsoft Downloads. Previously, the Library was only available for download to MSDN subscribers. The current download is the May 2006 Edition and future editions will also be available when we release them.

MSDN Library provides access to essential programming information, including technical white papers, software development kits and code samples necessary to develop web services and applications. This is an updated version of the MSDN Library for Visual Studio® 2005.

This is a good news. I'm tired to get the one from the torrent (the only library, without any software). The online library isn't always the case...

I wonder, why don't they release it as a DVD image? (instead of the 3CDs)
Is there a way to make the CDs into one DVD (and make it install it)?

dear Avi

If you able to download these CD,s look for Network Install option avialable in MSDN , through this wizard you will create a network Share folder and  3CDs will become one Installation folder

after that you can burn it on a Blank DVD-R ,

check the installation notes on these Cds and there must be a method related to Network Installation a few year back

Netcopy.exe program were used for this purpose , I think its changed now with the new versions of MSDN

I hope that works

This is very bad news, especially for those subscribers who have paid big money to have this information.  Now their investment is basically worthless.

I am in the middle of thinking about joining TechNet Plus.  I now wonder if they will do the same thing here.

I am not against sharing of information, but there is now little reason to subscribe to MSDN.

I think it is quite obvious the release of this documentation is because of the EU Antitrust case.  The core argument in that case was the availability of the technical documentation -- without having to shelve out $$$ to obtain technical details on an already-paid-for product (Windows XP).

Alas, as such knowledge was already available online (through MSDN site) I am not a fan of this being entirely free.  We'll just wait and see all the script kiddies have a fiest with this [probably] EU-mandated release of information.

Microsoft give away nothing, unless it suits them!

This is another capitulation to fend off open source for a little longer
;-) and little to do with the EU. They still have not complied with the EU!

If you understand Microsoft's modus operandi towards "open source", and see how it has gradually shifted its position, this is just a natural step for them to take.

"Death by a thousand cuts" are words that spring to mind.

"The next IBM!" ;-)

I think that this news is absolutely great as I have VB6 but I don't have the library for it... now I can look stuff up without having to use the website!

Also it means I don't have to pay for it on disc [:D]
