The SQL Server team is unleashing the first widespread test builds of the next version of Microsoft’s database, a k a SQL Server 2008 R2 (codenamed “Kilimanjaro”).
Earlier this year, Microsoft officials said to watch for a Community Technology Preview (CTP) test build of SQL Server 2008 R2 sometime this summer. On Twitter on August 10, Jason Coombes (databasejase), a SQL Server database administrator, tweeted:
“SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Evaluation & SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition CTP have just appeared on MSDN”
Update: On the “Microsoft Data Platform Insider” blog, the Softies are saying the SQL Server 2008 R2 bits are downloadable by MSDN and TechNet subscribers. The public will get access to the test build on Wednesday, August 12, according to the Softies. And there’s more coming, according to the team. From that August 10 blog posting:
