As I predicted, another delay and watch when in 2007 they will cancel the SP completely.
[N] This is a bad decision, leaving the admins who need to manage WinXP networks in the future, some for many years.
Bad news for home users who can't  afford new Vista PC's and have to download 200+ MB on patches each time they reinstall.

SP3 is now planned for first half of calander year 2008:

Windows XP Home EditionSP1SP2
August 6, 2004
SP3 for Windows XP Home Edition is currently planned for 1H CY2008. This date is preliminary.
Windows XP ProfessionalSP1SP2
August 6, 2004
SP3 for Windows XP Professional is currently planned for 1H CY2008. This date is preliminary.

Microsoft thumb on nose... "Goodbuy Windows XP hello Vista."

How many megabytes of updates will a fresh install of XP SP2 take by then?

Any bets that Vista will be on SP 2 before XP gets to SP3?

Good luck to those people who have dial-up Internet.

Suppose it's just Microsoft listening to their customers :-(

Microsoft says, "Why would you want XP SP3 when you can get Vista?"

I'm guess this is just another way they can add to the reasons to upgrade to Vista. I'm also sure that Vista SP1 will be more ugent to work on than XP SP3.

They will never release it. Because the end of support for Windows XP is 2 (two) years after the Vista release - it's exactly 2008. SP2 is the second and last SP for WinXP.

They probably realize that Vista itself isn't a big enough upgrade for those who already have perfectly working XP machines. Therefore, they are desperate to get people to upgrade so they will try to make us do so by any means possible.  Sure, Vista has some really nice features, but are those features - mainly eye candy - worth the steep upgrade price if you're not getting a new PC anyway?

I can't help but notice that there is always a hidden agenda to what M$ does.  Ex: Validation.  It doesn't "protect the consumer" or anything like that - if any thing it make things more inconvenient for us honest users!  All they care about is getting as much money as possible.  That is why they have validation and that is why they have delayed SP3.

Like any business, M$'s goal is to make money, and they will do whatever it takes to do just that.

"1H CY2008" would mean sometime between January '08 & June '08.    Vista hits store shelves January '07, so from that, XP would end mainstream support and go into extended support on/around Jan (or Feb) '09.    So depending on when in the range of "1H CY2008" SP3 would arrive, the end of SP3's first year (which presumably would also correspond to the end of support of SP2 unless it gets the 2-year exemption to the 1-year rule) would line up perfectly with the 2-year mark post-Vista and allow for XP SP3 to transition from mainstream into Extended support for the following 5 years.

Also, volume of the post-SP2 updates can be mitigated with either WSUS or slipstreaming install media.   The picture of fresh installs don't have to be as bleak as you're trying to paint them.

Why is not Server 2003 R2 mentioned?

The article is about Windows XP, Server 2003 is another OS.

Also, Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 is already in beta, I don't think they will delay it to 2008.

Aside from Vista in Jan 07,  They have the update to Server 2003,  And Longhorn Server to work out,  also it's been said that SP1 for Vista will also come out when Longhorn Server does,  which is kinda odd I guess.  SP3 shouldn't be bigger then SP2 was though,  since SP2 also had new features and new code in it aside from just patches,  SP3, if you keep up with Windows Update should be small, now if you don't update and just wait for the next SP, then it will be pretty big.

Also, from what I remember reading about the new code in Vista and they way they've put it together,  they can release patches and SPs faster for it as compared to XP since vista is more moduler in design.
