2 weeks ago I posted my annual list of what we can expect for this year. WinXP SP3 was also mentioned in the list, I put it in summer 2006 as I had several sources for this, including this official list.

Now it seems Microsoft silently changed the release date to 2007, while the publishing date of the list remains unchanged. Maybe I checked the list before that date, but I'm quite sure I didn't.

Last year in April, Ballmer said windows XP sp3 would ship before "Longhorn" comes out. Now it will be a year later: 2nd half or 2007!!

Anyway this sucks of course, in my opinion Windows should get a SP every year until the general support is dropped. Now home users, admins and OEMs who deploy XP have to download a lot of fixes when a new PC is installed. admins can slipstream the fixes but it is a hassle. A SP is very convenient in that way. No wonder techies build there own SP's and release the to the web. Waiting 3 years for a SP is too long!

I hate it when MS does this, and let me predict this Bink.nu headline somewhere in 2007:

"Microsoft cancels Windows XP SP3, instead comes with roll-up-fix"

Strangely SP2 for Windows Server 2003 is scheduled for 2nd half of 2006 (as in my list)

When Microsoft stopped making SP5 for windows 2000 family products
that time I felt that , Microsoft is not capable of handling the
pressure when they lost there credibility by having new threats and vunleribilties in there Service pack , they just wanna get rid of
Service packs as we all know by the new thing they introduced
Windows Geniune Advantage is nothing just to be kept there self
to be accountable , as more fingers pointed whenever their famous
OS become messed with flaws vunlerbilites and threats

so they just wanna keep there self from realeasing buggy Service packs

Also One day I can perdict they will not issue any Service pack for Vista as there products are luaching like much rooms

they will just lauch new OS in every year and ask users to buy it
Shame on microsoft for leaving Network Admin and users

on there own [8o|]

this delay of sp3 for winxp probably is because of vista. since things got cut back on vista, that are supposed to be added later. and lots of those components are "supposed" to work on winxp, i think that they are delaying sp3 so that they can add some of the vista stuff into winxp....
that seems like the optomistic look at the situation. the more likely look is that they will not add vista apps into winxp, but will release sp3 so that it will have better network and server integration with vista and their other future products.
to me it just seems kinda weird for microsoft to wanna backport alot of their apps to winxp, instead of just forcing people to buy into vista.... almost seems to nice of them......so there must be a catch somewhere, i just dont see it yet.
also maybe who knows. they might be planning on having vista released, and then winxp sp3 so that it will work better with the upcoming vista server software. that way sp3 would officially be the final major upgrade to the os and keep it in legacy support and make it work with future software technologies. and if anyone wants more, they need to buy vista

They will attempt to sell another XP version instead. Remember Windows Me? Nothing but a 98 upgrade. They will attempt to get every $ they can out of XP before they end support for it.

IMO anyway!!

Unfortunately, this doesn't help their reputation for releasing updates in a timely manner.

Vista, though it has it's own team, and others are being brought in to help with the new OS...doesn't mean that MS doesn't have the resources to continually improve XP.  XP is a great OS..but, it needs some serious fine tuning and MS owes that to it's customers to provide the best of the best, before moving on.

Otherwise, it's the same ole same ole.  "We didn't do a good enough job with that OS, so here's another...so on and so forth".

They really do need to focus on bringing the best out in XP.

Maybe well see an Rollup in 2006 instead of an SP and then a real SP in 2007 as Bink is reporting...

I hope that MS reverses this position as SP2 took a while and now if SP3 comes in 2007 it will be too long between drinks for corporate/home customters.

Lets hope they change plans.

I don't understand all the drama about SP releases. As long as MS is releasing security and functional updates on a regular basis, why should we obsess about a Service Pack?
