Microsoft obviously had a shortlist of names to choose for naming Longhorn, some DNS research (also done by Bink.nu's member dersonc for Brazil) result in the at least 2 alternatives.Windows Rubyru·by (rū'bē) n., pl.-bies.
Windows 07 or Windows Seven This is a logical name, short for Windows 2007, yes it wil be released in 2006 but in the second half so it will have next years number. You see this in all MS products, like the just released Encarta 2006, Digital Image Suite 2006 and Money 2006. Except for SQL 2005 where the marketing of the name has gone to far to keep up with the delay of SQL Yukon.
What about the possiblity that these are for the Server version??

Wasn't Emerald the codename for the Media Center 2004 refresh (a.k.a. Media Center 2005)? Might Ruby be a follow up version?
I mentioned Windows View in the initial Vista article.
Emerald is MCE 2005 update due soon
Diamond is MCE "Vista"
Well, even more to the point then, and a departure from Harmony, Symphony, et al... Ruby seems like it is in line with Emerald and Diamond. These are precious stones.
The arguement against this it would seem, is if these are related, I'm surprised that they have gone as far as to register a website based on a codename.
That would be a first for Microsoft, I think.
