When I wanted to download the Windows 7 OPK on the Microsoft OEM website, I noticed this:

BITS Internet Explorer Plug-in for Managing Downloads
The file you are attempting to download is very large, which increases the probability that it won't download completely if the transfer is interrupted for any reason. To minimize this inconvenience, you can download the BITS Internet Explorer (IE) plug-in and return to this page when you have finished installing it.

BITS IE Plug-in Installation Instructions:
Requirements:

  • 1. Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista
  • 2. IE 6 or greater
To install:
  • 1. Download the self-extracting files. Click here to begin the download.
  • 2. Extract the files into a directory on your local machine.
  • 3. Run the "install.js" script by double-clicking on the file.
  • 4. Restart Internet Explorer.

To download the file using the BITS plug-in:
Right-click the link, then select “Background Download As” from the menu. This will start the download process using the BITS plug-in.

I always wondered why IE couldn’t make use of BITS excellent features, but ironically you can not download Windows 7 OPK using this plug-in on Windows 7 (x64)

Compatibility wizard suggestions did not help.

The icon of the plug-in executable hast text in it “BITS DEMO”, that feels good.

Built date is 31-1-2007

I really hope MS will fix this plug-in or better create a decent one that would work with MSDN and TechNet downloads too.

To download, try this URL if you do not have the OEM credentials:

microsoft.com/.../bitsfiles.exe

A fix for Windows 7 x64 is to either run the IE 64-bit version with BITS downloader or copy bits_ie.htm & bits_ie.exe to the SysWOW64 folder for the 32-bit version. It should work fine after that.
