According to a story over at Washingtonpost.com, the latest definitions file for Microsoft's Anti-Spyware beta flags Symantec's Norton Antivirus products as a password-stealing trojan and prompts users to delete portions of the program. Users who follow the instructions hose their installation of Norton, requiring delicate Windows registry edits and a complete removal/reinstall of Norton. Microsoft's support forum is quickly filling up with complaints about this problem, many from businesses that have been pretty hard hit. This should be a cautionary tale about deploying beta products in production environments."

Who, in all seriousness, would deploy a beta product into a production network.  Sure, there are some exceptions (our very own bink is a good example), but in a SME you would have to have rocks in your head to bet the company on beta software.

That's what test-labs are for!

I totaly with anti-spyware. Norton Anti-virus is the worst of the worst protection software you can ever install. Sure version 2006 is some improvement, but it's still bloated and makes your pc run 50% of it's speed. Also Norton doesn't detest lots and lots of virusses that other anti-virus program detects.

The detection ratings of Norton products have always been ranked very highly, if one allows automatic updates to install on a daily basis instead of the default weekly versions. (Corporate Edition 10.0 and Consumer Editions 2006 do this by default)

The interface and customer support is where the problem is. No one likes the convoluted interface or the resource-hungry processes that hide in the background. Installing and Uninstalling the products result in so many errors that they've had to release their own special Removal Tools for their own products. Getting support when problems occur is even worse-- they charge for phone support and their web site is a mess.

Even so, as amusing as it is that everyone loves to pick on Symantec like everyone likes to pick on Microsoft... this is a freak accident, that I'm sure will be resolved in short order. And more amusing is the fact that companies have installed a BETA product in production for their defenses. Very foolish behavior.

I used MacAfee antivirus two years ago it was the worst thing I every encountered and uninstalling it was just as bad as Norton I had to use there special remover tool and that did not work I still had to go into the reg and delete left behind crape. That is why I went back to Norton Antivirus in 2005.

It should be called Torture AntiVirus, the way it slows down Windows. I switched over to NOD32, but even removing NAV was a nightmare. I'll have to format and reinstall once more sometime. NOD32 has the best detection rate, fastest scanning speed and smallest memory footprint. I recommend everyone to try it once at least.

Norton has unistall programs on their website that work wonderfully. They automatically remove registry entries. I've tried them and they work.
I found out from norton customer service...it took all of five minutes on the phone...

I've used Norton for years...never had a virus get thru and damage my system and never had complications except for once when updating and I uninstalled wrong.

Spybot is great..i've used it for years too...i also used the old ms beta with norton and never had a problem..
I decided not to use the newer beta on my own pc and I guess i'm glad of it after reading these posts...

I have the new beta...windows defender ..on my sons pc...is this the one that damages norton? I'm all worried after reading different things....

thanks
