Wndows Server Code Name Longhorn is schedueled for release to beta testers sometime later today, with some of the most important changes coming to Longhorn Server Core. Core will support a grand total of 8 roles, double the 4 roles it had back in mid 2005. The grand total of roles available to Server Core includes:

  • Active Directory
  • Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services
  • DNS
  • DHCP
  • File/Print
  • Windows Media Services
  • Terminal Services Easy Print, Remote App, and Gateway
  • Virtualization (configuring a server as a dedicated host for virtual servers.) (won't be available immediately)

PowerShell is also included in the 3rd beta release of Longhorn Server, as well as the Windows Firewall being enabled by default.

_22281.dvd is the last CTP build, not the Beta 3 build. It hasn't been released yet. There are no posts on Connect, and no posts in the newsgroups. I don't think aeroxp knows what they're talking about.

So April CTP was built on March 30, 2007 while Beta 3 was built on April 17, 2007.

That's what it looks like.  But it seems the primary version "6001" hasen't changed at all.

6001 is not the build number for Longhorn. Vista is 6000 and Longhorn will always be 6001. Not really a build number anymore though. It's more like an OS version, kinda like WinNT 5.0, WinNT 5.1, WinNT 5.2, WinNT 6.0, WinNT 6.1, WinNT 7, etc.

Longhorn Server Beta3 is Build:         16510
Longhorn Server April CTP is Build:     16497

So beta 3 is only 13 new builds over April CTP.
