We are happy to announce the availability of LimitLogin v1.0, an application that adds the ability to limit concurrent interactive user logons in an Active Directory domain. It can also keep track of all logins information in Active Directory domains (without necessarily enforcing logons quotas).

The challenge of limiting concurrent logons in a distributed environment is huge, and although LimitLogin is not a "bullet proof" solution to all the aspects of this challenge, many customers might still find this tool helpful, as this capability has been highly requested by different customers (banks, ISPs, libraries etc) in numerous RFPs etc.

LimitLogin capabilities include:
- Limiting the number of logins per user from any machine in the domain, including Terminal Server sessions.
- Displaying the logins information of any user in the domain according to a specific criterion (e.g. all the logged-on sessions to a specific client machine or Domain Controller, or all the machines a certain user is currently logged on to).
- Easy management and configuration by integrating to the Active Directory MMC snap-ins.
- Ability to delete and log off user session remotely straight from the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in.
- Generating Login information reports in CSV (Excel) and XML formats.
Please keep in mind that this tool is Not Supported (similar to a resource kit or support tool).

The public download location is http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/d/0/fd05def7-68a1-4f71-8546-25c359cc0842/limitlogin.exe

Whohoo! Microsoft have been promising that for years. If you work in schools it's something you get asked about time and time again.

I helped beta test this product. While it was promising, the was some usablity difficulties with it. The news groups and testing in general was pretty quiet and few updated releases. I will download and see if they improved it. I work for a school and this was nothing but trouble for us. Too many scripts to run and they would not run correctly on all machines thus causing headaches for us.

LimitLogin is certainly better than the pathetic and flawfull Cconnect, but is still a very limited tool and a nightmare to try and deploy ...

Anyone wanting to seriously manage user sessions on a Windows network should look at UserLock (http:www.userlock.com).

UserLock, contrary to LimitLogin :

- does not require AD schema modification

- does not require an IIS server

- comes with an integrated deployer

- supports Windows NT 4.0 domains

- provides E-mail & popup notifications

- logs lock/unlock events

- defines login limits by group

- allows you to customize messages displayed to the user

- allows you to set workstation restrictions

I thoroughly tested both solutions and UserLock by far gives me the most bang for my buck !

Looks like Userlock has a 10,000 user limit.  Not very useful for a school system.  Ours has 170,000 users.  Back to the drawing board.  :-(

UserLock has absolutely no limitation in terms of users, also the pricing depends on simultaneous sessions, i.e number of physically connected workstations + (any possible) Terminal Services sessions.

Does your school system really have 170,000 computers?

If it is the case, please tell me ASAP who can I send my resume to ...;-)))
