People in the city of Lund in Sweden that use the Microsoft Vista OS can't connect to the Internet.

According to this local newspaper, the reason is because Lund is a Linux city which has a a Linux server that doesn't like Vista.

Lundis Energi blamed Microsoft because Vista has got a bug and it isn't going to change the configuration of the server just to cope with the flaw.

A local Microsoft rep said it could probably fix the problem if Lundis Energi got in touch with it.

Apparently the issue is caused by Vista setting the DHCP BROADCAST flag to 1 by default. Previous versions of Windows had this set to 0. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233

Setting the BROADCAST flag to 1 is allowed according to the DHCP RFC 2131, therefore it's the linux server which doesn't comply with the RFC and needs to be updated/fixed.

But of course, as always, it's Microsoft's fault anyway ;)

Yeah,  it's such a joke when you actually point out that it's not a problem with Vista but the linux server.  It gave me a good laugh.

Instead of brown nosing M$ like this site normally does, don't you think if it worked with previous versions of windows it should also work with vista.

Like there hardware compatibility vista sucks big time.

Backwards compatibility please M$.

Who leases an IP straight to their PC from the ISP?  That seems odd to me.  I have at least one residential gateway/router/firewall device between me and the ISP and either use it, or the modem in bridge mode to handle the leasing and/or authentication.
