So I build a new Windows XP ISO with SP3 integrated, this is a Volume License editions (VOL) which only accepts Volume License Keys (VLK). When I want to install it on a clean machine, I noticed that setup prompts for a product key and it does not allow me to continue, which should be a new feature in XP sp3. OK so I fill in the VLK but it does not accept it, I try another one from a customer of mine, does not work either. Angry

I found out that the problem is when you do the XP Sp3 slipstream process on a WIndows Vista machine, the API gives a different response and screws up the PID process. This is a bug and Microsoft knew about this in December, still the bug remained and made it all the way to RTM, nice work Microsoft.

So XP SP slipstream only on XP or 2003 machines!!!

See the dicussion thread here: Key not working after SlipStream

Seems that MS also killed off going from SP1 or RTM to SP3. In a RC of SP3, you could go from SP1 to SP3 but not now....

I'd like to point out that you *can* slipstream from Vista, with one added step:

Right-click the Update Executable, then choose Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, then enable Windows XP SP2 Compatibility Mode. Click OK on the Properties window, then slipstream to your hearts content!

I downloaded the following images from technet:

en_windows_xp_professional_with_service_pack_3_x86_cd_x14-80428.iso

en_windows_xp_professional_with_service_pack_3_x86_cd_vl_x14-73974.iso

Wen I tried install the first image, I can install without serial number, but when install the second image i need put a valid serial volume license key (not OEM, not retail) and the installation stops until you put a serial.

In my opinion if you slipstream the service pack 3 in a OEM image of XP you can install without serial number.

I think is not relevant the version of Windows vista.

Sorry for my poor english.

joseredes: This issue only effects the Volume License image in Vista - OEM and Retail are not effected.

Also, OEM and Retail allow for PID-less installs, while VL still requires a key, by design.

screwed up problem, but i kind of understand why it wasnt fixed, the affected userbase of this bug is far less than say a bug that crashes IE7 or an exploitable hole in the firewall... it was just low priority... consiering it affects people doing XP slipstreams of SP3 on a vista machine... seems round about wrong sorta.

nLite v1.4.5 corrects slipstreaming of SP3 RTM under Vista

www.nliteos.com:

nLite 1.4.5 Final

2008.05.08

Finally the XP SP3 was released so here is the final nLite version update as well.

Just one important thing changed, SP3 Slipstream under Vista. It would reject your valid CD-Key. Not my doing but it is fixed anyway.

So in order to fix the XP SP3 CD-Key issues remake the Slipstreamed version from scratch with this nLite version.

upd: XP SP3 Slipstream under Vista, CD-Key issue

FYI you can still slipstream SP3 to RTM, SP1 or SP2 XP CDs.

The installation limitation is only for installing to an actual already running XP installation.
