Some of you remember how it was possible to change the boot logo screen of Windows 95/98. I'm not sure why anyone would go into the trouble of actually doing it, but it seems that it is possible to do the same for Windows Vista.
By using a freeware 3rd-party tool called Vista Boot Logo Generator (written by Dan Smith), you can easily change the Windows Vista boot screen and use any high resolution image or photo as your boot screen.

This has more to do with the fact that the boot screen in Vista was supposed to have some high-res image, but that was abandoned when it negatively impact load times for the system. This is why we have the strange, black, "non-logo" boot screen today. If you want to chew up a few machine cycles, this helps you reactivate those bits that Microsoft intentionally skipped and allows you to provide an image.
there's an alternative Boot screen that comes with Vista. you enable it by going to msconfig>no GUI Boot and click apply. personally, I'm just fine by the current Vista logo screen. my PC is always on so the only time I really see a boot screen is when there's a power outage and I'm forced to restart ;)
My understanding was that the high res boot screen was incompatible with some graphics cards and why it was abandoned, not for performance reasons.
Both incompatibilty and performance were the reason why Microsoft dropped this feature. But for people who don't have any problems with either of the two, it's another way to personalize their Windows installation.
Either way it's a nice little tool to have around if you want to personalize it even more.
While I've not used this (I may give it a shot), I do like Stardock's Logon Screen app. It lets you change the login screen from the blue Vista background to a picture of your choice. Stardock is the same folks who wrote the DreamScapes add-on to Dream Scene for Vista Ultimate and have had an app for changing the login screen for quite awhile (XP/W2K days).
