Well if you believe everything on the Net then you might want to cruise over to eBay to bid on Bill and Melinda Gates' 1990 Lexus.  I have no idea if this is the genuine article or not but the person selling it sounds like they have sold stuff on the late night shopping channel.  But wait, there's more...it even comes with Bills' old car phone!  The thing I question the most is the letters of authenticity signed by Gates himself.  Hmmm.

Check it out here.

Well this is simple Bink, just call Thurrott and have him check with his sources at MS and in a few days we'll see an "EXCLUSIVE!" on one of his sites if it's true. Just kidding of course.

I doubt Bill really drove this car, the certificate of authenticity that he signed is using MS letterhead that I have from 2003, I find it hard to beleive that when he sold the car in 1995 that the corporate letterhead stayed the same for the next 10 years.

But I posted it because it was an interesting article and this guy could sell anything to anyone!

The logo on the letterhead is the same color and design as the business cards that I've seen lately.

Though one would have to wonder what happened to the car between 1995 (when the plate expired) and when it was apparently donated in '98.   Maybe it was the front plate that is framed (I can't remember when Washington stopped requiring new year tabs on the front plates), or that he just stopped driving it and had it parked and unlicenced in his garage between '95 & '98.

The worst part Spy, is we know someone will pay a high price for it even if it is fake, just like the people who buy empty Xbox 360 boxes off eBay (when they're clearly labeled as empty).

Seriously...I didn't realise that.  Wow.

As for the car, look, it may well be true.  Perhaps some super-sleuth will find a photo of Gates driving a similar car...who knows.

I have read this listing a couple of times now and each time I find more that makes me laugh.

Hey, it's +37oC here in Melbourne and expecting +42oC tomorrow.  I've nothing better to do and I HATE the heat!

Guys look at State of Washington Vehicle Certificate of Title, the name (not de signature) si Bill Gates.  On an official document you must have your legal name wich is William H. Gates (Bill si just his nickname). The document si FAKE.

Look at the two documents...different signature styles.

I'm no signature expert, but they do look similar (the "B" in Bill and the "G" in Gates especially).   The differences could be due to different pen types.   What still has me troubled is the differences in the dates.   The title is dated 2/28/95 but is for a '90 car, the letter to the school is dated 2/12/98.   If the title was signed to transfer ownership to the school, then why the 3-year difference?

I'm not quite sure I'd call it a fake, but something definately doesn't add up.   Maybe Bill reads Bink.nu and could comment?   [H]

eBay have allowed this back on, with the same item number.  Wow.  Now it has me wondering if it actually is for real???

It is back again at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Lexus-LS-Bill-Gates-BILL-GATES-OWNED-FULLY-DOCUMENTED-1990-MICROSOFT-25pix_W0QQitemZ4601388076QQcategoryZ14240QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem   A web search also brought up a previous sale that ended with no buyer before the one from the original bink.nu post.   Seems like if eBay has pulled it once, the seller is pushing his luck re-listing it.   Given the weirdness in the dates on the docs, about the only thing left that I'd consider as reliable proof of former ownership would be if a link appeared under http://www.microsoft.com/billgates saying, "Yes, that actually was once my car."   But I'm a skepticical, 'glass half-empty' sort of person.

About Spy

Hello world, as they say. I'm in Melbourne Australia and work as a Systems Administrator. I go to work every day with a smile on my face as I just love my work. Our company works across 30+ sites around the state so I travel a bit. We use mostly MS products, IBM hardware and 100% Cisco networking...it's a sweet mix for sure. I've been around Bink's site since it's inception way back when it was just a group on the MS site...that was a while ago. Bink.nu is the leading source of Microsoft news on the web that's for sure and I love being a part of Steven's team. Anyway, hope you enjoy the site.
