1. Open Notepad
2. Type 'AAAA BBB CCC DDDDD' (or any other 4-3-3-5 letter combination)
3. Save the document, and close notepad
4. Open the saved file

The resulting text has been turned into Unicode - hopefully Microsoft will issue a Critical Security Bulletin for this soon [;)]

Actually, 'AAAAAAAA BBB CCCCC' works as well. You can also use any character where the ASCII value ends in a zero in place of the space (such as a lower-case 'p'). It is a probelm with the unicode detection... the smaller the sample of text, the more difficult it is to guess.

phunky : I remember reading this before more than a year ago. What I don't remember is WHERE I read it. Probably a good time to fix the bug in Vista.

Oh, BlackDigital.  what versions of Notepad are affected by this bug?  The ones from Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista?

fortunately, this problem does NOT happen under the Windows 9xME editions of Notepad.
