As part of its efforts to continually improve its products and make them more useful for customers, Microsoft periodically releases update packages known as “service packs.” Service packs deliver product updates and selected enhancements, without the complete overhaul of releasing a new version.

Today the availability of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the 2007 Microsoft Office system was announced. The service pack includes major performance enhancements for Office applications, most notably Microsoft Office Outlook, as well as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. One big benefit is SP2’s boost to interoperability — with this release, Office supports additional built-in file formats such as PDF and ODF.

PressPass talked with Jane Liles, group program manager, Office Sustained Engineering, to discuss what customers can expect from Service Pack 2, how the improvements will provide added value, and how Microsoft is increasing its commitment to interoperability.

PressPass: Why should someone download this service pack for Office 2007?

Liles: This release builds on customer feedback and offers enhanced stability for Outlook, calendaring reliability, and many more improvements to applications that run on both PCs and servers. Microsoft has also been working hard to build interoperability into its products across the board, and so Office now also includes additional file-format support, which makes it much easier for customers to work with different file formats in the same application.

PressPass: What are the main improvements that customers will notice with SP2?

Liles: Users should notice the improved performance and stability of Outlook, better charting functionality in Excel, and more control over the appearance of SmartArt graphics.

On the server side, IT professionals will notice several enhancements to the security and performance of SharePoint Server 2007, including support for read-only content databases, improvements to forms-based authentication, and an STSADM command-line utility that enables administrators to scan sites that use the variations feature for errors. SharePoint Server will also feature better support for newer versions of the Firefox browser.

Service Pack 2 for the 2007 Office System will be made available to Windows Server Update Services in April, classified as a service pack.

Service Pack 2 includes some significant work, including: built-in ability to save as ODF & PDF formats, improvements to Outlook’s performance and calendar reliability, significant bug fixes for charts in core Office applications, the ability for client service packs to be removed using an uninstall tool, and a host of customer-requested improvements to the Office Server products.

It is also a rollup of all fixes that have previously been released for Office 2007 products.  Additional information will be posted to the Office Sustaining Engineering blog later this month.

Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman has spotted what appears to be an internal software roadmap from Microsoft. The roadmap reveals a milestone of year end 2009 but the dates aren't very clear:

In the roadmap you can see that Office 14 is clearly identified as Microsoft Office System 2009.

Bink: I dont think so, we might get Office 14 released this year but it will  not be named Office 2009, it will be named Office 2010.

Or maybe.... Office 7 !! I mean it is possible as long as marketing likes it. Office 95 and Office XP came out with Windows 95 / Windows XP, now lets have Windows 7 with Office 7 Party!!!.

They never used 7 with before and as for version number? Microsoft marketing does not bother, Windows 7 is Windows 6.1 in binary version, so Office 14 binary named Office 7 seems fine too.

Yeah, let's hope for Office 7! Wink

We’re pleased to announce that Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the 2007 Microsoft Office system is expected to be released in the near future.  Although we aren’t yet announcing the exact release date, it will fall between February and April of 2009.

Historically, we have waited to communicate details about service packs until their release (or very shortly before).  As we communicated with SP3 for Office 2003 and SP1 for the 2007 Office System, we will be taking steps to increase transparency and visibility into the Office servicing model at the request of our customers.  To that end, we would like to start sharing some details into what will be included in SP2 for the 2007 Office system.  This is by no means an exhaustive list of everything included in this service pack and we will share more details prior to the final release, but we want to start communicating to customers what they should be aware of at a high level.

To be fair, this is not the first time we have talked about SP2.  Several months ago, we announced that we’ll be further demonstrating our increased commitment to interoperability by including support for Open Document Format (ODF), XML Paper Specification (XPS), and Portable Document Format (PDF) in SP2.  In addition to those file format additions, some other highlights that you’ll find in SP2 include:

For Office Desktop Programs:

·         Improved Outlook Calendaring Reliability·         Improved Outlook Performance·         Enabling Object Model support for Charts in PowerPoint and Word·         Improved cryptographic functionality by supporting all cryptographic algorithms offered by the operating system·         Improved functionality in Excel’s charting mechanism·         Ability to ungroup SmartArt graphics (and as a result, the ability to add animations to them in PowerPoint)·         Ability for Visio to export UML models to an XML file compliant with the XMI standard·         Tool that enables the uninstall of Office client Service Packs

For Servers:

·         Performance and manageability improvements to variations in Enterprise Content Management (ECM) including STSADM commands for repairing links between source and target pages·         Improvements around processing status approvals from Office Project Web Access into Office Project Professional 2007

·         Improvements to read-only content databases and index rebuild timer jobs in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Today, Microsoft debuted Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Release 2 (R2), an update to the award-winning Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. Microsoft representatives demonstrated the new release for the first time before an audience of telecom and IT professionals at the VoiceCon tradeshow in Amsterdam. Customers will be able to purchase the release, currently in private beta testing, beginning in February 2009.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 delivers important new functionality that extends software-powered voice, particularly for remote and mobile workers; provides on-premise audioconferencing to help reduce operational costs; and introduces new developer advances, including the ability to build communications-enabled business processes. These enhancements will improve business communications through a unified infrastructure and user experience.

“Office Communications Server 2007 R2, debuting just one year after the Microsoft unified communications launch, highlights the pace of innovation that is possible with software,” said Stephen Elop, president of the Microsoft Business Division at Microsoft. “This new release puts Microsoft on a rapid path to deliver voice software that does much more than a network private branch exchange (PBX) and with much less cost.”

Customers worldwide are embracing Microsoft’s unified communications platform, which streamlines communications by combining e-mail, instant messaging, conferencing and voice communications onto a single, unified platform.

The Office and MU teams says :

"As we noted when we released Office 2003 Service Pack 3 via Microsoft Update (MU), we are committed to providing at least 30 days notice before making Office service packs available via Microsoft Update automatic distribution (for Vista and XP).  Today, we are giving notice that SP1 for  the 2007 Microsoft Office System will begin being available via MU Automatic Update starting around June 16th.  We released SP1 for Office 2007 to customers approximately 5 months ago and since that time we have had 10’s of millions of downloads and a very good reaction from our customers.

Given our commitment to advance notice, we wanted to use this blog as one of many avenues to alert our customers to the fact that we will be distributing SP1 automatically via Automatic Update beginning June 16th.  The availability will happen gradually and not everyone will see it at the same time.  Think of the 16th as the earliest possible start of distribution and that no sooner than that date will SP1 start to become available to customers' systems via this channel.  This is necessary to ensure that our service infrastructure can meet the enormous demand for the service pack.............................." .....Continue At Source

The Outlook Mobile Service (OMS) was introduced in Outlook 2007 to allow you to send and receive text messages in Outlook. It also enables you to configure mobile notifications to have important messages, calendar summaries, and reminders forwarded to your mobile phone as text messages. The OMS features depend on hosting providers which provide the connection between Outlook and your mobile phone.

Until now, few users in North America were able to use these features because only a few wireless service providers were supported by SMSLink, the only hosting provider available in North America when Outlook 2007 was released. With the recent introduction of SMSOfficer, a new OMS hosting provider, you can send and receive text messages in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 regardless of which wireless service provider you use.

Click here to create an account with an Outlook Mobile Service (OMS) hosting provider to connect Outlook 2007 with your mobile phone.................Continue At Source for screenshots with instructions.
