Posted on blog.msdn.com and already removed, this MS employee talks about the next version of Windows: Windows.Next:

Folks started asking me whats in Windows 8 - and the first thing I have to say is that I resonate Steven Sinofsky's interview on who said we're calling it Windows 8? I agree with Steven that till things are baked there is no point floating ideas since it leaves people frustrated when things don't turn out the way they expected. The Windows team promised to deliver a smarter, faster and more user friendly OS with Windows 7 and they delivered just that - the latest quaterly results of Microsoft are a clear indication that Windows 7 has been a success and customers got what Microsoft had promised them! The plan is to use a similar approach for the next version of Windows and till things are finalized you're not going to get a "marketing" name from us:)

So how am I referring to the next version of Windows without saying that many words - well simple - Windows.next:) This is definitely not the official version but a version that is becoming common along my circle. So what are our plans for this next version...

The minimum that folks can take for granted is that the next version will be something completly different from what folks usually expect of Windows - I am simply impressed with the process that Steven has setup to listen to our customers needs and wants and get a team together than can make it happen. To actually bring together dozens and dozens of teams across Microsoft to come up with a vision for Windows.next is a process that is surreal! The themes that have been floated truly reflect what people have been looking for years and it will change the way people think about PCs and the way they use them. It is the future of PCs...

OK I have been participating in Exchange 2010 beta testing and also Office 2010 beta testing, but I never heard that one of the most requested feature is actually available in Outlook 2010!

Below you see a screenshot of my accounts in my default Outlook 2010 profile.

I have 4 Exchange mailboxes from 3 organizations in my profile and 2 hotmail mailboxes.

image

Before Outlook 2010 you could add extra mailboxes, but only from the same organization and sent items were saved in sent items folder of the main mailbox.

Now in Outlook 2010 by default it will let you connect to 3 Exchange mailboxes maximum, in or outside default Exchange organization.

But Group Policy settings (GPO) for Outlook 2010 can change this maximum behavior from 1 to 15 (!).

This GPO set to maximum of 15 Exchange accounts, translates to this registry setting:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\exchange]
"MaxNumExchange"=dword:0000000f

Other GPO settings are also available for forcing behavior.

image

 image

Now I wouldn’t be happy with 15 mailboxes in my Outlook, but I can manage 3 or 4. I suggest using the favorites section for quick access.

image

When sending a new message you can choose which (Exchange) account to use.

Items you sent are saved in the sent items of your Exchange account

Thanks to Kees for pointing me to Jaap Wesselius article: http://ucug.nl/blogs/jaapwess/archive/2009/11/12/outlook-2010-en-meerdere-exchange-mailboxen.aspx

So I am at the airport and my laptop has built in mobile broadband and I have a cheap roaming subscription. Now I would like to do Internet connected stuff on my iPhone too, but that roaming data is ridiculously priced. Now with Windows 7 you can share your internet connection (nothing new) but you can make it an access point!

With the the drivers that came with Windows 7 for the Intel Wifi card, Windows also installs the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter:

image

To configure it use the network shell command NETSH in Administrator elevated Command Prompt:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=BinkLaptop key=ChangeMe09

This configures a Wireless Lan network with SSID “BinkLaptop” and protected with the key “ChangeMe09”

Next enable Internet sharing on your internet connected network card, in my case that is the Wirelless Broadband modem card. Select the virtual Wifi as home networking connection:

image

image

Disable all but IP

Next start the hosted network:

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Voila! That’s it

Now connect your phone or other WiFi enabled device to your Windows 7 Laptop Access Point

UPDATE (Thanks to ArnaudA Bink.nu member, see comments)

I use Windows 7 x64 Edition. The most Intel WiFi cards are not supported yet.

Supported Devices

Connectify works with new Windows 7 logo-tested WiFi devices, and many older devices that have compatible Windows 7 drivers. There are a number of Intel WiFi devices that do not have proper driver support. We are working on a solution that will allow Connectify to work with all WiFi devices (and even older versions of Windows) and will make an announcement when Microsoft have a resolution.

These devices are known to be compatible:

•Atheros AR5005GS (as in the TP-Link TL-WN651G)

•Atheros AR5007EG with 8.0.0.238 firmware

•Broadcom 4310-series (in many Dell laptops)

•D-link AirPlus G DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter (driver version 3.0.1.0)

•Intel 5100/5300 (with latest drivers from Intel's site, version 13.0.0.107, 64bit systems only)

•Ralink RT2870 (in many 802.11n USB dongles)

•Realtek RTL8187SE (with the drivers that came with Windows 7)

•Realtek RTL8192u with 1370(Beta)

These older devices are known to be incompatible:

•Atheros AR9285 (likely others too)

•Belkin Wireless G MIMO devices (as of version 3.1.2.0)

•Broadcom 4320-series (in many Dell laptops)

•D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G122

•Gigabyte GA-WPKG 802.11g

•Intel 5100/5300 on 32 bit systems

•Intel 3945/4965,2200BG (most Intel cards, unfortunately)

•Mac Book Builtin Broadcom devices

•Realtek RTL8187 (like in older 802.11bg USB dongles)

•Zydas ZD1211 (also in 802.11bg USB dongles)

3G Mobile Broadband and Wireless Internet devices

Some wireless broadband providers' hardware disallows the use of their device in an ICS setup. Microsoft are working on a solution to support all of these and will make an announcement when we have a resolution.

These devices are known to be compatible:

•Clear 4G+ Mobile USB

•Dell 5520

•Franklin CDU680

Microsoft is now communicating (in an official Dutch Press Release) their method of doing a clean install using upgrade media of Windows 7. It is the same method that worked with Vista and involves installing it twice:

  • Do a clean install of Windows 7 using an upgrade installation media (DVD/USB)
  • When installation is done, do not activate it, as it will not accept your product key.
  • Within 30 days (or before activating is required) do an upgrade installation again of using Windows 7 upgrade media (DVD/USB).
  • Now you will be able to activate Windows 7 using your product key

Microsoft does not recommend doing the “upgrade hack” first mentioned by Paul Thurrott last week and which caused quite a stir, because a Microsoft blogger indirectly accused Paul of promoting piracy, which in its turn was probably caused by sites re-printing Paul's article with titles like “Windows 7 install trick saves up to $100” Read Paul’s reply on that: Enough, Microsoft. No One Is Endorsing Piracy. Obviously. - SuperSite Blog.

The press release only mentions Vista and XP as legitable upgrade OSes. I wonder why a Windows 2000 machine would not be supported (if it has the required hardware)

The Dutch press release is not available online yet

A Philadelphia developer has rooted out an unfinished feature of Windows 7 that turns any laptop into a wireless access point, allowing other Wi-Fi-enabled devices to share the connection without special software.

Nomadio, which specializes in military network consulting and development, used the new "Virtual Wi-Fi" feature in Windows 7 to create Connectify, a free application that it released as a beta last Friday.

Virtual Wi-Fi was crafted in Microsoft's research group as a way to "virtualize" one wireless card as several separate adapters. The project was discontinued in 2006, but the work made its way into Windows 7 as "Native 802.11 Virtual Wireless Fidelity (Virtual Wi-Fi) object identifiers (OIDs)" .

"A year ago, Microsoft talked a lot about this as a big feature in Windows 7," said Alex Gizis, the CEO of Nomadio. "But driver support didn't get finished. The low-level code is in there, but the driver-level stuff isn't. And there's no app or setting in Windows to turn it on."

Explaining that the feature was "half there" in Windows 7, Gizis said his company realized "we have the rest of the software here, in our networking work."

Full Story at PC World

The beta of Connectify can be downloaded from Nomadio's Web site.

Software packaging isn't exactly the epitome of great design. And, as the world's most used operating system - and being from Microsoft - Windows has had some rather dull boxes designed for it to sit within.

But it's also had some great packaging designed for it too, so we've gathered together images of the box art from each version of Windows, from 1985's Windows 1.0 to next week's Windows 7.

Windows 1.0 - blue is the colour

An "operating environment," Windows 1.0 may have had an eye-catching ad featuring Steve Ballmer, but the design of the box was aimed squarely at business and featured the old Microsoft logo on a navy background.

Analysts at Websense Security Labs have detected a wave of attacks directed at people who use Microsoft's Outlook Web Access.

The web security company said on Wednesday that it has seen upwards of 30,000 emails an hour directing users of the web-based email software to click on a link to update their mailbox settings as part of a 'security upgrade'. In fact, the link takes them to a site that contains malware.

According to Websense, the emails are convincing because they are personalised to include the victim's email address. In addition, the malicious website is spoofed to include the targeted domain name, and the URL on the emails looks like it should lead to the user's particular Outlook Web Access site.

"The victim's domain name and email address are also used in a number of locations on the malicious site to make it that much more believable," Websense said in its security advisory.

The malicious site installs the Zbot Trojan on the computer, Websense's security research manager Patrick Runald said.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said on Friday that the security company had also detected a spate of malicious emails aimed at Outlook Web Access users. "In the last few days, there appears to have been a very active campaign," he said.

Spoof Outlook
