We’ve talked extensively about the improvements that Power Pack 3 for Windows Home Server will deliver for users.  We were proud to show off the beta code of Power Pack 3 at the recent CEDIA 2009 custom installer technology show, where we got lots of positive reception to the feature set.  It’s clear that the anticipation of using Windows Home Server with the upcoming Windows 7 client PC operating system is reaching feverish pitch!  OK, maybe that was a slight exaggeration…But the bottom line is that we’ve gotten tremendous feedback (and test coverage) from you, our enthusiasts, around Power Pack 3 – and we couldn’t be more excited.

This being said, our top priority is to ensure the absolute highest level of product quality, and to this end, we will continue with additional testing of the software. As with past software releases, our team will not ship the official final release of Power Pack 3 until the community has validated our work. We expect to deliver before the end of the year.

Microsoft’s researchers are working on yet another operating-system research project which can trace its roots to the company’s Singularity project. This new operating system, known as Helios, is a heterogeneous multiprocessing platform built around satellite kernels.

(The folks over at the Ma-Config.com blog sent me a pointer to Helios after I wrote last week about another Microsoft Research operating system project, codenamed “Barrelfish.” Without the link they provided, I wouldn’t have found information about Helios, as it isn’t listed on the active projects page for Microsoft Research. Microsoft researchers have written a 14-page paper on Helios, however, which is slated for publication in October.)

Singularity, in case you need a quick refresher, is a microkernel operating system and set of related tools and libraries that is developed completely in managed code. Singularity is not based on Windows; it was written from scratch as a proof-of-concept. Microsoft’s Midori incubation project is another effort which can trace its lineage to Singularity.

Fears that netbook manufacturers would be forced to install a cut-down version of Windows 7 on their machines have been allayed by Microsoft.

The software giant also confirmed that the daft three application limit originally planned for Windows 7 Starter has been removed.

"OEMs and ODMs have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook," said a Microsoft UK spokesperson. "[But] Starter is an entry version and doesn’t have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn’t there anymore."

Microsoft's reassurance follows heavy hints dropped earlier this week at Intel's Developer Forum in San Francisco.

The Starter version only comes in a 32 bit variant - as does Windows 7 Home Basic, aimed at emerging markets - and is missing features such as Aero Glass, Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.

The Web Deployment Tool simplifies migration, management and deployment of IIS Web servers, Web applications and Web sites.

The Web Deployment Tool simplifies the migration, management and deployment of IIS Web servers, Web applications and Web sites. Administrators can use command-line scripting with the Web Deployment Tool to synchronize IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0 servers or to migrate an IIS 6.0 server to IIS 7.0. The Web Deployment Tool also enables administrators and delegated users to use IIS Manager to deploy ASP.NET and PHP applications to an IIS 7.0 server.
Migrate Web applications between IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0 with ease
Simplify the planning of your IIS 6.0 to IIS 7.0 migrations by determining incompatibilities and previewing the proposed changes before starting the process. Learning about any potential issues in advance gives you the chance to take corrective measures and simplifies migration.
Synchronize your server farm efficiently
The Web Deployment Tool allows you to efficiently synchronize sites, applications or servers across your IIS 7.0 server farm by detecting differences between the source and destination content and transferring only those changes which need synchronization. The tool simplifies the synchronization process by automatically determining the configuration, content, databases and certificates to be synchronized for a specific site. In addition to the default behavior, you still have the option to specify additional providers for the synchronization, including COM, GAC and registry settings.
Package, archive and deploy Web applications more easily
The Web Deployment Tool enables you to package configuration and content of your installed Web applications, including SQL databases, and use the packages for storage or redeployment. These packages can be deployed using IIS Manager without requiring administrative privileges. The tool also integrates with Visual Studio 2010 to help developers streamline the deployment of Web applications to the Web server.

Microsoft’s New Tool in the Fight Against Malware Free to Consumers -

Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Corp.’s new no-cost, core anti-malware service that helps protect consumers against viruses, spyware and other malicious software, will be available tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 29. Microsoft Security Essentials, independently certified by West Coast Labs, is backed by the company’s global security response team and is built on the same award-winning core security technology found in the company’s security solutions for businesses. It requires no registration, trials or renewals and will be available for download directly from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials.

“Consumers have told us that they want the protection of real-time security software but we know that too many are either unwilling or unable to pay for it, and so end up unprotected,” said Amy Barzdukas, general manager for consumer security at Microsoft. “With Microsoft Security Essentials, consumers can get high-quality protection that is easy to get and easy to use — and it won’t get in their way.”

Making Microsoft Security Essentials broadly available as a free consumer download for genuine Windows-based PCs is part of Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to provide a more trustworthy computing experience for all customers. By making Microsoft Security Essentials easy to get and easy to use, Microsoft hopes to encourage broader adoption of anti-virus protection across the consumer audience, which in turn will help increase security across the entire Windows ecosystem. For business customers, Microsoft continues to offer Forefront Client Security, providing centralized, comprehensive management and reporting capabilities.......Continue At Source

The release of Windows 7 promises to go back to the basics of what a PC user expects, improved performance and ease of use. In addition to these core benefits, you can expect an OS that gives back as much as it takes. Looking back at the Windows ecosystem over the past 10 years, a new version of Windows usually required more in terms of system requirements with each new release. Windows 7 takes a different approach by actually being usable on systems as far back as 2001 with a minor upgrade of course. Windows 7 is not just about looks, the Windows Team has invested significant amounts of work into making it easier to do common task, whether navigating a local folder or a network share simpler.

The Taskbar for instance, is more intuitive, productive and provides subtle ways of working with programs that will make using the PC everyday less of a chore. When you use a feature like the new HomeGroups which makes it easy to manage a home network with just a password, users will be more confident to better utilize and share information efficiently. A feature like media streaming is also a great example of the engineering that allows for greater freedom of how you enjoy your personal music, videos and photos.

Fundamental experiences such as installing Windows has also improved, for instance, the initial setup phases focus on getting Windows installed on the system faster, moving common task such as selecting your local language, entering a product key and joining a network to the Out of Box Experience. Also, users are more informed about what is happening as Windows 7 upgrades their system providing a more ‘enlightened' experience if you will.
