Surprise [:O] avi, mpg, wmv video files not playing properly. no picture, just sound

i have win xp, and a brand new computer purchased in august.

all of sudden when i try to play an avi file in windows media player or real player, it doesnt work. all i get is sound and no picture.

however, if i open it in windows media player, press stop, and then open the same avi in real player, then it works fine. and vice versa - if i open in real player first.

this is also happening with mpg and wmv files. i have just tried some old avi files from my digital camera and there are no problems with those.

so some avi, mpg and wmv files arent working properly Crying [:'(]

why is this? i cant imagine what i have done for this to happen. im no expert but i am definitly not a newbie so i am rather confused!

    thanks for any help.

It sounds like basic overlay problem. What graphics card do you have? Its just a matter of resetting default settings in advanced options on the graphics card under overlaying.

i have an "NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128mb" graphics card.

im in dxdiag and have clicked the DISPLAY tab, now what do i do?

i have run the two tests and they say that everything is fine, but the videos still arent working.

    thanks.

it's the AMD64 that's your problem.....err not a problem, but it's having conflicts with all the videos.  I haven't found out yet,but I'm having the same problems with my machine, and it has a 3700+.  It has nothing to do with the overlays.  I think I read something somewhere that all codecs are 32-bit, and that's why it won't work, but that doesn't explain why mp3's will work.  My buddy also told me some things will mess up because they are 32-bit.  Tho I really can only speculate.  All I know is that everything else so far has worked great, I just can't watch any movies.

Anyone else have any other solutions to our problems?

No video playback, it show like it suposed to in every kind of program i can find to run maintanence and i ahev even uninstalled all codes and so forth and then installed everything everything agine and no change

I however think this couold have something to do whit the Nvidia driver we are using, i have a XFX 6600GT and installed the new beta drivers and after that  i thinkit stoped but i cant be sure sence i didnt play videos for a day or so after i installed then.

It's some kind of problem displaying the video sence it's just black but it still plaim to render the video it even show the number or frames.

Any help would be greatly apriciated

I'm having the same problem on my laptop.  I don't think this is a codec problem because I could play the exact files a week ago.  Now these videos have sound but no picture.  If I toggle between display size I can sometimes get a still from the video but nothing more.

    Any suggestions?

Hello, I had the same problem myself discovered it was because of my graphics card.
I have an Nvidia 6800, you need to configure it so it uses a single display not CLONE. You can do this by going to display properties, click on settings, advanced, choose your nvidia tab(mine is Geforce 6800),  nView display settings  and changing  nView display mode to single. mine is 2 of 2. Yours may be different im not sure. Problem solved.

If you choose the wrong number you will have to load in safe mode uninstall your drivers, restart, re-install your drivers and choose the correct one.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Puggy1.  I got my similar problem solved by doing exactly what you suggested.  The good thing was I did not have to re-install/install driver after I chose the wrong number....it simply went back to the previous settings and I just selected different number and wmv works like a charm after that.  Thanks much for sharing the solution.

    hey puggy

what does "mine is 2 of 2" mean?

i followed your instructions exactly until i got to that part, i didnt see how it applied so i left it out.

when i press "apply" after setting it to single mode my monitor goes black and says "no signal" then turns off.

luckily when i turn the monitor back on my original settings are back, which means "clone" is selected again.

any ideas where im going wrong?

    thanks

Re: avi, mpg, wmv video files not playing properly. no picture, just sound

right. i just changed the display to single and then picked DIGITAL instead of ANALOGUE.

my videos now play - yay! however, this has changed my screen refresh rate to 60Hz and in the manual it says that i should have it set to 75Hz.

i did change it to 75Hz a few weeks ago and that could be why my videos stop working. it wont let me change it to 75Hz now though. the only option that appears is 60Hz.

why does the manual say i should have it at 75Hz and not 60Hz? also what is the difference between analogue and digital display? is analogue for the large fat monitors and digital for the tft monitors? i have a tft monitor.
