    Win 7 install problem

I received my copies of Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed (custom/clean) 1 64bit version on my desktop with no problem.Yesterday I installed the 2nd copy (custom/clean) 64bit on my wifes computer and it seems to be working well except.....

When the computer boots, it presents a screen that asks for a choice of the following:

    A previous version of Windows

    Windows 7

    The recovery console

When I look at the directory structure I find that there are three folders of "old" windows. There is "Windows.old", "Windows.old.000" and "Windows.old.001". There is a reason I suppose for the Windows.old folder since I did an upgrade from Windows XP to Vista shortly after the computer was purchased. There would be another folder due to the installation of Windows 7 but I have no idea why there is a third folder. MSCONFIG does not provide a choice to remove the extra choices. Anyone know how to prevent this choice selection screen and simply boot straight to desktop? Should I try a reformat and install again? Thanks for any assistance.

    Two ways.

MSCONFIG:  go to the Boot tab and remove all entries other than your Current OS selection.  You can select each line, and click on Delete.  If there are no other options.. simply set the boot timer to 3.  That way.. if the default selection is an older OS.. it will still give you time to select Win 7.

Best option:  Run the upgrade again.. this time choose to do a clean installation.  (back up all necessary personal data first)

I should have answered this much sooner but....I simply forgot. I have everything taken care of, the installs on all 5 machines went very well and I finally managed to remove the "windows.old" folders from the wife's computer.

Try again with this admin user: Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable. OR Delete the folder from a command prompt at boot may work for you.
