    Resolution set too high

Im curious what solutions there are if you set your resolution too high, so that the monitor doesnt support it and there is no 15sec then it reverts to previous resolution. I had a friend that this happened to, he tried to set the resolution high but the screen went black then he rebooted and the screen was still black.

    Here´s how I solved it:
I booted pressing F8, selecting "faultproof" (for the love of god I cant remember what its called in english!) then I removed the drivers for the graphic card. Rebooted, started normally the screen was running on some default driver on low resolution. I installed the drivers and it was ok after that.

Im just curious if there are any other ways of solving this not having to remove the driver and reinstalling it?

If you boot into safe mode you should be able to just change the resolution to anything other then what safe mode has it at.

But safemode always runs at 800x600, it doesnt matter what you set that to. It doesnt change the resolution in Normal mode.

Oh that's right. Safemode uses the vgasafe driver. Well, the only other thing I can think of is to use a hardware profile. Or try and find the value for the resolution in the registry. Should be XResolution and YResolution values somewhere in there.

Did you try the last known good ? It will reset the config back to the last time you successfully logged in . That should do it .

    Thanks

Last known good is not the solution. Once you have booted into windows it thinks all is well and saves that to the last known good. The pc booted after the resolution was set too high, it booted into windows with the black screen so Last known good wasnt worth tryin...

    I've done this before!

My solution, which was when it was available, was to attach a monitor that could handle the resolution, and reset the settings with that one.

It didnt happen to me, since I use xp and it doesnt allow the monitor to be set to resolutions it cannot support. It was just a newbie mistake.

Well Morpheus, in this case my friend didnt have a spare monitor at home. But a good solution if you do have one.

Sorry but enough of possibile solutions, no offence. Some are quite good as the Last known good, if you hadn´t booted after the mistake ofcourse..

I solved it like i wrote in the first post, was curious if there were any other more easier way..Last known good would have worked. But my friend messed around with the resolution and after it went black he rebooted. Paniced I guess...He´s no computer-wizard like us =)

But it seems that uninstalling the graphic card was the easiest solution and the guy i helped out didnt have any other pc´s at home to use another monitor.

    Re: Resolution set too high

What I did was boot into save mode and removed the display adapter.

After booting up in 'normal' mode the system found the adapter again, but adjusted the settings to the default; 600x800.

I try to avoid using the last known good configuration option; I've had a few times where a lot of settings were reset to default settings, as if the last known good configuration was when windows was installed. Anyone knows what could be the cause of that?

    Cheers

Press F5 whilst booting. Select "Enable VGA mode". Change display settings. Reboot. Enjoy.
