Re: Only one IE window open at a time...

About a month ago I started encountering a strange problem with my Internet Explorer v6. It only lets one browser window open at any particular time. At first I thought it was whenever I clicked on a link that called for a new window to be opened (ex: with the target=_blank command), but now I realize its more than that. I've got my IE as a quick launch button, and every time I try to open more than one instance of IE, it closes the current window in order to open the new one. This is what it does when I click on a link that opens in another window...it closes the current window, and opens the linked site in the new window.

I tried Googling the problem and the closest thing I found was on a MSFT support site outlining the same problem when a download link is clicked. My browser works fine when a download link is clicked though.

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling IE, but to no avail. I tried exporting the settings from my laptop to my desktop (my laptop's IE works fine), but it didn't work. I've uninstalled all popup blockers to see if that was the problem, but nothing fixed it. I was hoping that the SP2 upgrade I did the other day would fix it, but it didn't. The only thing I think I have not done is to reinstall WinXP...which I don't want to do. I would rather keep using Mozilla than do that. (I switched to Mozilla until I could find a fix for this problem...but I don't really like it that much.)

Thank God for this and thank you ALL for helping to put a stop to the EVIL Yahoo Ctrl+N problem!  I nuked Yahoo extras and Yahoo toolbar and life is again bareable.

I couldn't figure out WHEN it had happened and that was driving me nuts.  So when I found this thread it was when lightning struck and I realized it was right after I installed Yahoo Messenger.  I guess that I installed the extras too or it did it automatically.  Regardless, getting rid of that S*!% fixed everything and I can work in peace again.

THANKS AGAIN TO WHOEVER CREATED THIS PLACE!!

    Hey people,

I work at Intel - came across a user which had the same problem. IE opens, and you launch another instance and boom- the first one terminates.

Uninstalled Yahoo Extras and fixed. Very nice advice from you guys.

Thanks so much for this thread!!!!

I had to register here, just to say to all of you who posted the solution, thanks!!!

Today, I was forced to download the new version of the Yahoo Music Engine so I could access my subscription music. After I did, the computer would no longer be able to open multiple internet explorer windows. Same as has been discussed here.  I tried doing everything, and nothing worked angry

So with a little help from Google, I came to this wonderful thread, which solved my problem. Apparently, the Yahoo Music Engine was [sarcasm]so kind [/sarcasm] as to install the Yahoo toolbar without my permission. shame_on_you

    Thanks, Yahoo!!!  beatup

You guys rock!  And now these forums go to my favorites.....

This worked for me (SEE POST ABOVE: carterhamilton wrote the following post at 09-12-2004 7:41 AM). Thanks! BTW, I have Verizon Yahoo and that is how I found the programs in add/remove. MUST RESTART COMPUTER AFTER REMOVAL.

If this isn't the best argument on the net for keeping old forum postings, I don't know what IS.

This issue has plagued me for over a week... in Paint Shop Pro no less.  Unchecking "REUSE windows for opening new shortcuts" means now all the pix open in ONE PSP window rather than (pick any number) .....sheesh!

     thank you SO much

    happy Canuck
