Hey guys ,

whenever am minimizing any window ( its supposed to go to the toolbar ), it disappears!!!!
However, i can maximize them back by using the ALT + TAB keys......I've checked the viruses by the latest Norton updates and the Stinger ( MCAFEE tool ) but nothing seemed to be strange..... What shall i do to get the windows back to the tool bar????

Weird.. you can get this effect using 3-rd party program - most popular are Object Desktop Themes (I used to minimize to tray before), mIRC (there is an option to hide minimized desktop windows) and few more. Did this behaviour appeared after a program installation or just pop up some day?

This happened suddenly and not after installing a certain software..... just wanna enable the option back if it is an option :)

Stu, try this: create new user and see if it's the same behaviour of minimizing. I searched the registry for any options but I couldn't find something related.. if it's ok you can extract your regisrty settings of the two users and compare them in Display, Control Panel, Start Menu sections (or even though take the working settings and import them in the broken one). Just last sentence - BE CAREFUL with the registry - a backup won't be redundant..

P.S. (of course there is a lot of other experiments can be done.. I hope somebody will offer something.. for example I woul'd try one of the 3rd party softwares that hides windows, set them to hide the windows, and after that restore the option to show them.. just a try..)

I Googled "hide windows minimize option" and found that there are many programs which will do this. If you are not the only user or the first owner of the computer, search for some of these programs http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=hide+windows+minimize+option&btnG=Google+Search .

hey all! i read this article before...cause i had the same problem..but i solve it. here is the solution!

first, go to help and support! its in the start} help and support}

second go to restore windows for aperiod of time before!

then..check the programs you installed fro the few days befor!( in my case i found two programs that make this problem, java and i tune!!)  and with your knowledge with your own programs , uninstall the impropriet program!

let say it doesnot work,even you deleted these programs..., you can restore your window for two days before! make a backup of you want!  then see if the problem still there! if not ..you sould know which program to delete!!

I've encountered this problem too.

Before, I used to fix it by running system restore. But I've disabled it for a while without any problems (because a friend of my says it's a waste of system memory and all).

So here I am, without system restore, and I realized I'm the only user account that has this problem.

How can I fix this? I'm desperate for help. Thank you.

Thanks lads, I've had the same problem and your discussion helped me solve this problem...It seemed that the Google desk top search bar, seemed to be interfering with it.

I did an uninstall, followed by a "System Restore" and this seems to have resolved the problem.

I also re-installed the Google tool and all seems OK now.

I've had this problem for two days now and it bothered the heck out of me so, for all of you that still have this problem and for the new readers that do not have a problem with the FriendGreeting card thinga majigi! or any other spyware adware problems, here is your solution; Go to: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs   Open or save the very tiny file and run it. (I scanned the file for viruses and spyware/adware and it checked out ok). You will have to tell your antispyware or firewall software that it is ok to run this file, anyway, that is all you need to do. You're very welcome,   Rami

I just fixed a similar problem.  When I started MS Word, the program would only run in the maximized mode.  When I selected “Minimize”, the window would disappear completely.  I noticed two things.  Word was the only program with the disappearing window, and when it disappeared it disappeared very quickly towards the top of the screen.  If your window is doing the same thing, try this:

• Open the program in the maximum mode.
• Minimize the program by clicking the minimize (center) icon in the bar at the top right corner of the program screen.
• Watch in which direction it disappears. Then:    

1.                  Push the “ALT” key

2.                  Press the "space" bar 

3.                  Press the “M” key (this should cause the Min Max Move Restore window to appear [in keyboard mode] allowing you to move windows in the keyboard mode instead of the mouse mode).

4.                  Hold down an arrow key in the opposite direction that the window disappeared and wait for a few seconds to see if it reappears.

 

When I did this, my hidden window in the minimized mode appeared from off screen (top) and lowered into view.  You can then click on it to return to the mouse mode of controlling windows.

Try the following: right click on the icon for your program in the

taskbar, then select "Size", then use arrow (cursor movement) "Right"

and/or "Down" keys. (Don't use your mouse to resize)
