    Web Page...publishing to Search Engines, and Web Stats followup..

    Ok, here's the deal. I am working on a website, the one you all see listed under my name, and what I need to do, is get it out there, under the major search engines. I have downloaded and started the process using WebPosition Gold, but since it's a trial, it runs out in 30days. I believe Google takes 4-6 weeks to add the site to it's database, and the free search engines WebPosition has in it's software, are not really the major search engines people on the internet turn to....I mean, how many of you guys use Google, or MSN?....compared to using AltaVista?

    So, my question is, what's the best way to get your site on the major search engines, and track not only the web traffic to the site, but how the search engines keep it on the top ten list, or front page of the searchs when you type in the keywords already in place in the code of the website?

    (aside from purchasing WebPosition Gold, that may be inevitable)

    Just get your meta tags up to date with lots of keywords relevant to your site and wait for the bots to hit you! Also make sure you have a robots.txt file for the bots to use.

    Don't worry my friend they will come!

    Thanks bud.

    How do I create/incorporate the use of the robots.txt file?

    There are some tools on some sites that let help you create them, like http://www.webtoolcentral.com.

    Basically you just need to have in the robots.txt
    User-agent: *
    Disallow:

    This will tell all robots to crawl your site and not disallow any pages or directories.

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /cgi-bin/

    That will stop them crawling your cgi-bin. Also include the following in the meta tags:
    <meta name="Robots" content="index, follow" />

    Hope that helps!
