  • Microsoft might phase out points for real currency

Posted by sumeethevans on October 9 2012, 11:00 AM. Posted in Xbox, Zune.

The controversial currency for Xbox Live and the Zune Marketplace has been widely used across the Xbox 360 to purchase Xbox Live Arcade games, gamertag pictures, and other downloadable content. The system means users have to purchase bundles of points that equate to 80 Microsoft Points for every $1. In our own testing in the final copy of Windows 8, we are now able to pay for music or purchase and rent movies in the Xbox Video store by using a credit card. You're still able to use Microsoft Points, but the store defaults to credit card transactions. A welcome change from the confusion of having to convert Microsoft Points to currency in order to assess the true cost of a rental or purchase.

  • Xbox Music to launch on October 26th with free ad-supported streaming

Posted by sumeethevans on October 3 2012, 3:48 PM. Posted in Xbox.

Microsoft is preparing to launch its Xbox Music service on October 26th. Multiple sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have confirmed the new service will launch at the same time as Windows 8. We're told that subscriptions, like the current Zune Music Pass offering, will be available alongside a free streaming service supported by ads — similar to Spotify. The service will be available on Windows Phone, Windows 8, and Xbox 360.

A key part of the service is Microsoft's SkyDrive integration that will allow users to store music and playlists in a cloud collection — available across multiple devices. Although Microsoft has plans to offer Xbox Music across multiple platforms, including iOS and Android, apps will not be immediately available we're told.

  • HBO Go coming to Xbox 360 on April 1st

Posted by sumeethevans on February 28 2012, 10:49 PM. Posted in Xbox.

HBO just announced that the HBO Go on-demand service will be coming to the Xbox 360 on April 1st, just in time for the second season of Game of Thrones. Although we heard back in October that HBO Go was on its way to the console, we'd not heard any word of a launch date until now.

To use the service, you'll need to have a subscription to HBO, and have downloaded the latest dashboard update. HBO Go joins a growing list of TV services available on Microsoft's console — Comcast, Verizon's FiOS, and Hulu Plus are either coming soon or already available — making the Xbox a serious contender for your cable box's space under the TV.

  • Xbox 720's Codename Is Durango

Posted by sumeethevans on February 19 2012, 4:18 AM. Posted in Xbox.

It might still eventually be called the Xbox 720, but it looks like we might have to start referring to the next Microsoft console by another name.

The name mystery is just one part of the puzzle as to what the next Microsoft console will be. Microsoft has faced criticism over the name of the Xbox 360 since it is not nearly as elegant as the PS3 or Wii. According to Kotaku, the console's codename is Durango, which is no indication whatsoever about what the final name will be, though there have been instances where a codename ended up being used due to favorable consumer reaction.

  • Microsoft France: no new Xbox in 2012

Posted by sumeethevans on January 31 2012, 3:20 AM. Posted in Xbox.

The next Xbox will not launch in 2012, Microsoft has gone on the record to say.

Cedrick Delmas, marketing director of Microsoft France, was asked by in a new interview (translated by Eurogamer's Oli Welsh): "Rumours indicate the presentation of a new Microsoft machine at E3 in June..."

    His response:

"We're in an industry that talks a lot, that likes telling stories. I am not convinced that things will happen this year. The Xbox 360's cycle is not over at all. The proof is that we haven't price cut this year.

"Afterward, what will happen at E3, it's still too early to say. What's certain is that there will be nothing new in 2012. If we wanted to counter Nintendo, we would have to be in a position to release something immediately, and that is not at all the case.

  • Kinect for Windows SDK to Arrive Spring 2011

Posted by sumeethevans on February 23 2011, 4:36 AM. Posted in Xbox.

Ever since the November launch of Kinect for Xbox 360, enthusiasts and academic researchers alike have expressed their excitement and intense interest in the possibilities created by the product’s ability to enable users to bring games and entertainment to life without using a controller.

Kinect for Xbox 360 and the potential seen within its core technology have captured the imaginations of the academic research and enthusiast communities. To encourage and support that creativity, on Feb. 21, Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief research and strategy officer, and Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, announced that the company plans to release a non-commercial Kinect for Windows software development kit (SDK) from Microsoft Research this spring.

“Microsoft’s investments in natural user interfaces are vital to our long-term vision of creating computers that are intuitive to use and able to do far more for us,” said Mundie. “The fruits of these research investments are manifesting across many of our products, Kinect for Xbox 360 among them.”

While Microsoft plans to release a commercial version at a later date, this SDK will be a starter kit to make it simpler for the academic research and enthusiast communities to create rich natural user interfaces using Kinect technology. The SDK will give users access to deep Kinect system information such as audio, system application-programming interfaces, and direct control of the Kinect sensor.
