  • Microsoft reveals Commerce Server roadmap

Posted by sumeethevans on August 9 2007, 2:21 PM. Posted in Commerce Server.

Interest in software that enables companies to build marketplaces on the Web is not as keen as it used to be back in the early days of e-commerce. However, Microsoft made a commitment Wednesday to keep developing its offering in this space for at least the next three years.

Microsoft released roadmap information for Commerce Server, saying it would release the next major update of the product in mid-2010. The announcement put an end to speculation that the company was not interested in staying competitive in the e-commerce enablement market.

The next version of the product is code-named Commerce Server 7, a name Microsoft's Ryan Donovan joked was in line with Microsoft's "creative" names for forthcoming products. (The company code name for the next major version of the Windows client is Windows 7). Donovan is a product line manager for Microsoft.

Microsoft has several goals for the design of Commerce Server 7, including tight integration with new versions of complementary Microsoft products, such as the .NET Framework and SQL Server, that also will be released around the same time. Microsoft also plans to include the ability for companies to build social networking features into their e-commerce sites using Commerce Server, as well as giving them the ability to integrate product catalogs with blogging and content-syndication sites.

The Microsoft Commerce Server Best Practices Analyzer performs configuration level verification, by reading and reporting only. For example, the Best Practices Analyzer gathers data from Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes, Microsoft SQL Server databases, registry entries, IIS Metabase Settings, and other parts of your deployment, and uses the gathered data to determine whether best practices are being followed. The Best Practices Analyzer does not modify any system settings, and is therefore not a self-tuning tool.Download At Source

  • Microsoft Releases Free Commerce Server 2007 Developer Edition

Posted by bink on July 28 2006, 7:09 PM. Posted in Commerce Server.

Microsoft this week released a free developer edition of its Commerce Server 2007, allowing developers to download the software ahead of its official ship date.

The free version, available on Microsoft's Web site, is a complete, full-function version of Commerce Server 2007 that's restricted to test and development environments. Production use of the software requires licensing the standard or enterprise editions, which are scheduled for release next month.

Commerce Server 2007 likely marks the end of the road for the e-commerce system's development and creation software. Microsoft executives have avoided commenting on Commerce Server's road map, and much of the product's functionality is expected to be farmed out to other Microsoft products, such as BizTalk Server and SharePoint Portal.

The first new version since Commerce Server 2002's release four years ago, Commerce Server 2007 is built on the ASP.Net 2.0 framework. The update offers new integration, deployment and reporting features, among other changes.
