  • March 2011 Hotfix rollup for System Center Data Protection Manager 2010

Posted by bink on March 4 2011, 10:51 PM. Posted in .NET.

This hotfix rollup resolves the following issues:

    • When you change the ports that are used by the Data Protection Manager 2010 Remote Access service, recovery jobs may fail.
    • On some client computers, the System volume runs out of space when local shadow copies are created and when the shadow copy storage is set to UNBOUNDED.
    • When you try to use one Data Protection Manager 2010 server to protect more than 1,000 client computers, you receive a warning that states that you cannot protect more than 1,000 client computers by using Data Protection Manager 2010. You receive this message even though Data Protection Manager 2010 can protect up to 3,000 client computers.
    • When you try to use one Data Protection Manager 2010 server to protect more than 1,000 client datasources, you receive a warning that you cannot protect more than 1,000 datasources by using Data Protection Manager 2010. You receive this message even though Data Protection Manager 2010 can protect up to 3,000 client datasources.
    • Data Protection Manager 2010 does not support the IBM System Storage TS2900 Tape Autoloader backup, recovery, or detailed inventory operations. The tape is left behind in the drive after any of these operations.
    • When you use Data Protection Manager 2010 Replication Agent to protect a 1.2 terabyte SQL server that has lots of .ndf secondary data files, Data Protection Manager 2010 Replication Agent crashes.
    • If you are not the administrator on a client computer, you cannot perform an end-user recovery of protected data on the client computer.
    • When there are many client computers that trigger client back up or client recovery operations, corresponding jobs are not triggered on the Data Protection Manager 2010 server. When the Data Protection Manager 2010 server enters this state, any later client backup or client recovery operations are not triggered on the Data Protection Manager 2010 server.
    • Data Protection Manager 2010 experiences slower performance if you try to protect more than 300 client datasources on a secondary Data Protection Manager 2010 server.
    • Data Protection Manager 2010 does not keep a recovery point for a client datasouce that was not synchronized during the retention period.
    • If there are many list items within of a SharePoint List in a SharePoint Content Database, the generation of a SharePoint Item level catalog will fail continuously for the SharePoint Content Database.

  • Decoders for the H.264 and AAC formats in Windows Server 2008 R2

Posted by bink on January 26 2011, 2:30 AM. Posted in .NET.

When you try to play back a video file or an audio file that is encoded with the H.264 video format or the AAC audio format, playback fails. Note This problem may be encountered by Windows Media Player, by Windows Internet Explorer 9.0, or by other applications that rely on the Windows Media platform to play media files that use these formats.

This problem occurs because the Desktop Experience feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 does not include decoders for the H.264 and AAC formats.

The Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) guides are the next version of Windows Server System Reference Architecture. The guides in this series help clarify and streamline design processes for Microsoft infrastructure technologies, with each guide addressing a unique infrastructure technology or scenario.

Each guide leads the reader through critical infrastructure design decisions, in the appropriate order, evaluating the available options for each decision against its impact on critical characteristics of the infrastructure. The IPD Series highlights when service and infrastructure goals should be validated with the organization and provides additional questions that should be asked of service stakeholders and decision makers.Updated! • Docs.com; Search Improvements, PDF, User Generated Templates

Posted by sumeethevans on October 19 2010, 9:38 PM. Posted in .NET, Office Labs.

In August, we released tagging and search to improve the basic discoverability of people, pages, and documents. Thank you everyone for your positive feedback and suggestions. I’m happy to announce that we’ve taken another step forward.

Full Text Search & Social Document Ranking

In August, we released the ability to search for People, Pages and Tags. Today, we’re releasing full text document search with social document ranking.

Searching docs.com for “Economics” will now reveal not only all documents tagged with the term, but all docs containing “economics” as well. This will return a much more comprehensive set of results and will help you find the documents you’re looking for.

    Support for PDF files

We want to help you share rich and meaningful content with your friends.

Starting today, you may now upload PDF files directly to docs.com to share with your Facebook friends.

    User-generated templates

Sometimes you don’t want your friends to edit your doc. You want them to copy it and create their own.

    Bulk Silverlight document uploader

It’s now significantly easier to share several documents at once. Simply drag and drop them onto the new Silverlight uploader.

  • Introducing DOCS… for FACEBOOK

Posted by sumeethevans on April 22 2010, 4:50 AM. Posted in Microsoft Corp, .NET.

I’m so excited to announce today the launch of a new beta Facebook app from FUSE Labs called “Docs”, also available at our docs.com website.  Built on Microsoft Office 2010, the Docs app enables Facebook® users for the first time to create and share Microsoft Office documents directly with their Facebook friends, using the Office tools they already know.

It’s been quite a sprint for the FUSE team to deliver this beta – from concept to its initial implementation in less than four months.  The FUSE Labs mission is to explore a range of “Future Social Experiences”.  In this exploration it’s our belief that we may increase the value of Office ‘docs’ by giving everyone the ability to seamlessly take their friends and connections with them from Facebook to docs.com.

The fact that we’ve been able to adapt the Office 2010 “Web Apps” technology to work directly with Facebook truly speaks to the flexibility and power not just of the Facebook platform, but also of the Office system’s rich “contextual collaboration” capabilities.  And we’d never have been able to achieve our critical ‘simplicity’ goals had it not been for our ability to use a new test feature from Facebook that allows us to build an instantly personalized and seamless document authorization & sharing experience directly from our site.

  • DFS Operations Guide: Migrating from FRS to DFS Replication

Posted by bink on April 21 2010, 1:48 AM. Posted in .NET.

This document guides you through the process of migrating from File Replication Service (FRS) to Distributed File System (DFS) Replication.

File Replication Service (FRS) is a technology originally introduced on Windows 2000 Server to replicate Distributed File System (DFS) folders and the SYSVOL folder on domain controllers. FRS was replaced in Windows Server 2008 R2 by DFS Replication for replicating DFS folders and for replicating the SYSVOL folder. This guide provides instructions for migrating replication from FRS to DFS Replication (for folders other than the SYSVOL folder).

Microsoft today announced KIN, a new Windows® Phone designed specifically for people who are actively navigating their social lives. Brought to life through partnerships with Verizon Wireless, Vodafone and Sharp Corporation, KIN is designed to be the ultimate social experience that blends the phone, online services and the PC with breakthrough new experiences called the Loop, Spot and Studio. “Working closely with our partners, we saw an opportunity to design a mobile experience just for this social generation — a phone that makes it easy to share your life moment to moment,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “We built KIN for people who live to be connected, share, express and relate to their friends and family. This social generation wants and needs more from their phone. KIN is the one place to get the stuff you care about to the people you care about most.”
