Microsoft: get rid of IE6 now

Posted by bink on March 5 2011, 10:47 PM.

10 years ago a browser was born.

Its name was Internet Explorer 6. Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye.

Microsoft created a website that is dedicated to watching Internet Explorer 6 usage drop to less than 1% worldwide, so more websites can choose to drop support for Internet Explorer 6, saving hours of work for web developers.

March 2011 Hotfix rollup for System Center Data Protection Manager 2010

Posted by bink on March 4 2011, 10:51 PM. Posted in .NET.

This hotfix rollup resolves the following issues:

  • When you change the ports that are used by the Data Protection Manager 2010 Remote Access service, recovery jobs may fail.
  • On some client computers, the System volume runs out of space when local shadow copies are created and when the shadow copy storage is set to UNBOUNDED.
  • When you try to use one Data Protection Manager 2010 server to protect more than 1,000 client computers, you receive a warning that states that you cannot protect more than 1,000 client computers by using Data Protection Manager 2010. You receive this message even though Data Protection Manager 2010 can protect up to 3,000 client computers.
  • When you try to use one Data Protection Manager 2010 server to protect more than 1,000 client datasources, you receive a warning that you cannot protect more than 1,000 datasources by using Data Protection Manager 2010. You receive this message even though Data Protection Manager 2010 can protect up to 3,000 client datasources.
  • Data Protection Manager 2010 does not support the IBM System Storage TS2900 Tape Autoloader backup, recovery, or detailed inventory operations. The tape is left behind in the drive after any of these operations.
  • When you use Data Protection Manager 2010 Replication Agent to protect a 1.2 terabyte SQL server that has lots of .ndf secondary data files, Data Protection Manager 2010 Replication Agent crashes.
  • If you are not the administrator on a client computer, you cannot perform an end-user recovery of protected data on the client computer.
  • When there are many client computers that trigger client back up or client recovery operations, corresponding jobs are not triggered on the Data Protection Manager 2010 server. When the Data Protection Manager 2010 server enters this state, any later client backup or client recovery operations are not triggered on the Data Protection Manager 2010 server.
  • Data Protection Manager 2010 experiences slower performance if you try to protect more than 300 client datasources on a secondary Data Protection Manager 2010 server.
  • Data Protection Manager 2010 does not keep a recovery point for a client datasouce that was not synchronized during the retention period.
  • If there are many list items within of a SharePoint List in a SharePoint Content Database, the generation of a SharePoint Item level catalog will fail continuously for the SharePoint Content Database.
Prerequisites

Windows Live Mesh reaches 5 million connected devices

Posted by sumeethevans on March 3 2011, 6:51 AM. Posted in Windows Live.

Today, we’re excited to announce an important milestone: Windows Live Mesh has now connected 5 million devices, with over 3 million users syncing 2.2 petabytes to the cloud. Windows Live Mesh was released on September 30th, 2010 and joined SkyDrive, a service already used by 70 million customers, as a core component of Microsoft’s consumer cloud strategy.

This marks an important moment in the steady transition to a world where people will use a blend of cloud services & PC-based apps together. As a company, we believe this trend will continue as people seek a personal balance in how they manage their data across multiple devices and services.

This is in contrast to those who believe that it’s a cloud-only world and that everything should and will live online. It’s a simple idea, but our customers tell us they want a choice in what works best for them.

To deliver this choice, our consumer cloud strategy is focused in three parts:

  1. Offering world-class email and chat services with Hotmail and Messenger that connect to services like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Gmail, Yahoo Mail and over 75 other websites around the world
  2. Providing a great platform for others to build on, including Microsoft services like Xbox, Office, and Windows Phone 7
  3. Connecting Windows to the cloud with Windows Live Essentials

What’s new with SP1 for VMM 2008 R2

Posted by sumeethevans on March 3 2011, 6:50 AM. Posted in System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

As you all know that SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 just gone RTM adding two new virtualization capabilities: Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX

How do I upgrade from SCVMM 2008 R2 to SP1?

Pretty simple, just 4 steps to upgrade

  • Backup VMM Database
  • Launch setup and follow the Upgrade Wizard
  • Repeat on each box [Console, Self-Service Web Server, Operations Manager Server]
  • Remove, then import new PRO Management Pack in Operations Manager
  • R2 Agents are supported in SP1, no need to re-deploy agents to Hosts and Library Servers
  • Upgrade the Integration components on all the VMs.

VMM 2008 R2 SP1 will take the virtualization management to a whole new level and is scheduled to be released within 30 days of SP1 released by the Windows Server Team. So we can expect it sometime next month.

I hope this post was of some help for those who are expecting VMM to be able to manage Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX on multiple hosts from a single console instead of managing it locally using Hyper V manager on each box.

SQL Edition Upgrade for Data protection Manager 2010 (DPM) Instance

Posted by sumeethevans on March 3 2011, 6:48 AM. Posted in Data protection manager server.

This tool is intended to correct a problem in SQL Server Management Studio on systems which are upgraded to DPM 2010 retail version from Eval or intermediate DPM 2010 builds (Beta, RC).

When you install DPM 2010 Beta, DPM 2010 RC or DPM 2010 Evaluation and upgrade the product to a retail version of DPM 2010. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio has two issues.
  • Issue 1: SQL Server Management Studio does not start, and you receive an error message.
  • Issue 2: SQL Server Management Studio starts. But on the Help menu, you receive the message that SQL management tool will expire in number day
This issue occurs because SQL Server Management Tools are not upgraded in the upgrade to System Center Data Protection Manager 2010. This tool is fixing that.

Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.3

Posted by sumeethevans on March 3 2011, 6:46 AM. Posted in Exchange.

Starting with Exchange 2007, neither the Messaging API (MAPI) client libraries nor CDO 1.2.3 are provided as a part of the base product installation. As a result, there is functionality missing that many applications depend on. Microsoft Exchange MAPI and CDO 1.2.3 provide access to these APIs

The Messaging API is a COM-like API that provides access to the contents of messaging stores. CDO 1.2.3 (Collaboration Data Objects, version 1.2.3) is a package providing access to Outlook-compatible objects through a COM-based API. Using either CDO or MAPI, a program can connect to a MAPI store, and then perform operations against that store. Starting with Exchange 2007, Microsoft will distribute the MAPI client libraries and CDO 1.2.3 as a Web download.
